Beaten play-off semi-finalists MK Dons had endured a difficult start to the season but seemingly turned a corner last time out by beating Carlisle 3-0, so they will be looking to build on that against Salford, who have also had a tumultuous beginning to their campaign.
The Ammies, who have taken just one point from their first 12 available in League Two, were knocked out of the EFL Cup by Port Vale via a 2-0 loss and have scored just one goal across those five games.
Both sides will be keen to build up some momentum sooner rather than later, making Monday’s clash at the Peninsula Stadium an intriguing one.
MK Dons to win - 6/5
While both of these sides have made a slow start to the season, MK Dons have shown more signs of improvement in recent weeks and can build on that in Salford.
Their 3-0 win over Carlisle was a convincing one. They racked up 15 shots, six of which were on target, won four corners and had 66 percent of the possession, so a repeat of that performance would surely see them overpower their out-of-form hosts on Monday.
The Ammies are on a eight-match winless run and have been dominated in the majority of their games this term. The only game in which they have outshot their opponents, when taking 18 to Doncaster’s 15, saw them manage only one effort on target, so their misfiring could cost them against the Dons.
A draw against Chesterfield could be seen as an improvement on their earlier results, but even in that clash against a newly promoted side they were outshot 15-6 and surrendered possession, suggesting Karl Robinson’s issues at Salford are likely to go on for a bit longer.
Robinson has won just 26.9 percent of his matches with Salford since taking over in January and the pressure is likely to build after a clash with the Dons, who landed the double on the Ammies last term, scoring seven goals across the two clashes.
Salford have lost seven of their last 11 matches, five of their last six at home and have been defeated to nil in all three of their fixtures at the Peninsula Stadium this term, suggesting a first win of the campaign may still be a while away for the Ammies.
Callum Hendry to score any time - 15/8
MK Dons forward Callum Hendry got the ball rolling against Carlisle and he could carry that momentum into Monday’s clash in Salford, at a stadium he knows very well.
The Scottish striker scored 21 goals in 66 league games over two years with the Ammies and he may make his former employers regret letting him go when his new side arrive at the Peninsula Stadium.
His replacement at Salford, Cole Stockton, is still searching for his first goal of the season while Hendry himself has netted once and provided an assist in three games for the Dons and could build on that solid start under Mike Williamson.
Key defender Curtis Tilt received two yellow cards in the Ammies’ 1-1 draw at Chesterfield last week and his replacement at centre-back, ageing former Aston Villa man James Chester, may struggle to keep the lively Scotsman quiet.
Hendry has registered two shots in each of his three league appearances for the Dons, with four of those hitting the target, and he could be a continuous threat against a Salford side which has shipped six goals without reply at home this term.
Joe Tomlinson to have a shot on target - 11/10
Salford’s defence has looked vulnerable all season and the absence of Tilt is an untimely one as they prepare to face a side that netted four goals at the Peninsula Stadium in this fixture last term.
Left wing-back Joe Tomlinson, who was actually playing on the right that day, was pivotal in that victory for the Dons, as he netted a brace, and he could have a big impact again.
The versatile Englishman has already scored once this season and only Alex Gilbey (eight) has managed more shots than Tomlinson’s seven for MK Dons in League Two this term, so he is in top attacking form ahead of a clash with a side he has previous form against.
Tomlinson is a big price to score and while that may appeal at small stakes, taking the odds-against for him to hit the target could prove to be great value too.
