Rotherham v Plymouth: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Plymouth sacked manager Ian Foster during the week, with the club hoping a change of voice in the dressing room will give them the late-season surge they need to arrest their alarming slide towards the relegation zone when they take on rock-bottom Rotherham.

Plymouth win - 21/20

The mathematicians will tell you it’s not all over yet for Rotherham, but everyone around the New York Stadium is planning for a return to League One next season.

The big question is: Are Plymouth going to go down with them?

This Friday night showdown in South Yorkshire is a huge game for Plymouth, who rolled the dice this week by sacking Ian Foster after less than three months in charge and putting Home Park mainstays Neil Dewsnip and Kevin Nancekivell in interim charge.

Their job is to put an end to Argyle’s miserable plunge down the division and they will see this as that much-needed opportunity to put three points on the board after a six-game winless run.

Plymouth were 15th and eight points above the bottom three after winning 1-0 at Swansea in February. Since then they have taken five points out of a possible 33 with the goals completely drying up.

Now they are 21st and just a point above Huddersfield, and with confidence ebbing away they won’t find this trip an easy one.

The pressure is all on them and Rotherham, who have effectively been down for a while, showed in last week’s 2-1 win over Millwall - just their fourth win of the season - that they are not going to exit without a fight.

However, the truth is that Leam Richardson’s men were pretty fortunate to claim their first win of 2024 with keeper Viktor Johansson, not for the first time this season, keeping them in it as the Millers were repeatedly cut apart by the Lions.

And Plymouth, in fairness, will probably be happier playing away from home under less scrutiny. At home they haven’t found the net in their last five games but Morgan Whittaker and his team-mates should get far more room to cause trouble at the New York Stadium.

Plymouth won the reverse fixture 3-2, back in the day when goals at Argyle games were frequent. They are still 18 points superior to the Millers and can show that gulf by claiming a much-needed three points.

Ryan Hardie anytime goalscorer - 7/4

Ryan Hardie has gone six games without a goal but the Scottish striker won’t be kept off the scoresheet for too long.

The 27-year-old frontman has been a model of consistency for Argyle over the last three seasons with 16 league goals in 2021-22, another 13 last term and 12 in the Championship this season.

His last strike came in Argyle's 2-0 win at Middlesbrough at the end of February, but in the last four matches he has fired off 13 shots and if he keeps getting chances, he’ll start taking them again.

And Rotherham will concede chances. They have conceded 81 goals - 15 more than any other side in the second tier - and even in victory over Millwall on Monday they allowed the Lions 21 efforts.

Plymouth -1 on Corner Handicap - 21/20

Rotherham won the match against Millwall on Monday which was the main thing. However, Millwall won the corner count an impressive 11-2.

The Millers have spent so long on the back foot this season that they struggle to get up the pitch, hence they average just 3.3 corners per game.

They concede on average seven corners per league outing, and since Plymouth win an average of 5.2, back the West Country side to take at least two more than the Millers on Friday, especially as they will likely be on the front foot from the first whistle.
