Romania v Ukraine Prediction, Tips and Odds: Rebrov's men to start with victory

Ukraine look set to start their Group E campaign with a comfortable win over Romania in Munich on Monday.

Ukraine reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2020 and will expect to progress to at least the knockout stages once again.

Former striker Serhiy Rebrov has impressed in charge of Ukraine, winning seven of his first 13 games in charge, and they warmed up for the tournament by holding hosts Germany to a 0-0 draw before losing to Poland and then hammering Moldova 4-0.

Ukraine are favourites at 10/11, Romania are 31/10 to win, with the draw 12/5.

Romania v Ukraine betting tips and predictions

Ukraine to win to nil - 2/1

Ukraine finished third in a tough qualifying group, behind England and Italy, before then narrowly getting past Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iceland in the play-offs to book their place in Germany.

They enter the tournament having lost just one of their last eight games - a 3-1 warm-up defeat in Poland - a sequence of results that includes comfortable victories over North Macedonia and Moldova and very respectable goalless draws with Italy and Germany.

Romania look the poorer of the two sides by some margin. They did top their qualifying group but it was a weak section that included Switzerland, Belarus, Kosovo and Andorra, and they approach Euro 2024 without a win in four games.

During that period they have meekly drawn with Northern Ireland 1-1 and lost to Colombia 3-2, before dull goalless warm-up draws against both Liechtenstein and Bulgaria. Hardly the sort of form to leave the rest of the continent concerned.

Ukraine have plenty of talented players to cause Romania problems in Munich, including Arsenal star Oleksandr Zinchenko and Girona forward Artem Dovbyk, who was the top-scorer in La Liga last season with 24 goals, and others.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin has recently played a big role in helping Los Blancos win another Champions League crown, while Mykhailo Mudryk began to improve towards the end of the season in the Premier League at Chelsea.

Considering Ukraine have scored nine goals in their last five, compared to just four for Romania over the same period, a victory to nil for Rebrov's men appeals.

Artem Dovbyk to score anytime - 15/8

Dovbyk's stunning form for Girona helped them to an unexpected third-place league finish as he banged in 24 league goals for the surprise package in Spain.

The 26-year-old has the attributes of an old-fashioned centre-forward - strong, agile and with the ability to bring others into the action in the forward areas, while being the chief goal threat for his side in and around the box.

He has hit an eye-catching 10 goals in 26 appearances so far for his country, including four in his last seven outings, and looks primed to hurt Romania on Monday.

His recent shooting stats at club level also point to at least one goal in Munich for the prolific striker.

Dovbyk attempted 18 shots in his last nine games for Girona, with nine of those registering on target, so if he carries that form with him into the tournament, Romania's defence and goalkeeper are set to be in for a tough examination.

Mykhailo Mudryk - Over 1.5 shots on target - 7/2

Mudryk had a difficult start at Chelsea after joining amid plenty of fanfare in January 2023 for a huge £63million.

However, he has finally begun to look settled at Stamford Bridge and was particularly impressive towards the end of the season, playing his part as the Blues finished strongly.

The 23-year-old scored five goals in the English top flight last term and weighed in with two assists for Chelsea so he appears to be warming to the considerable task of making an impact in the Premier League.

Also, in his last eight appearances for the Blues he attempted 11 shots, of which five were on target, so up against a Romanian defence that looks considerably weaker than the ones he was facing at club level just last month, Mudryk can make inroads.

At 7/2, over 1.5 shots on target for one of Ukraine's chief attacking threats looks a solid play.
