Roma v Lazio: Prediction, Tips and Odds

It's been a troubled season for Rome's top teams, with both Roma and Lazio firing their managers this term. Despite their struggles, both remain in the mix for a European spot.

With the top five in Serie A set to make next season's Champions League, fifth-placed Roma are in a good spot heading into this clash. However, Lazio are two places and six points behind and they are in must-win territory here.

Roma v Lazio betting tips and predictions

Roma to win - 6/5

These two sides drew 0-0 in the first Derby della Capitale of the season back in November, while Lazio won an ill-tempered cup tie in January. Jose Mourinho was sacked just days after Roma's Coppa Italia exit, with club icon Daniele De Rossi taking the reins.

The early signs are that De Rossi has been a good appointment for Roma, with the club winning seven of their last 10 in the league. They've suffered only one defeat in that run, a 4-2 loss to Inter Milan. De Rossi has also taken the Giallorossi into the last eight of the Europa League, giving them two potential routes back into the Champions League.

De Rossi's record at the Olimpico is strong, winning five of his first seven home games across all competitions. He has helped stabilise things, although Roma have only lost two of their games against sides below them in the table. Six of their eight defeats this term have come at the top four, with only Inter and AC Milan beating them at the Olimpico in the league.

Lazio have also struggled against the teams above them, losing seven of 10 encounters with the top six. Their home record is patchy too, losing three of their last four at the Olimpico. They've beaten just two of the top eight at home, so this test may be too steep for new Lazio boss Igor Tudor.

Only Inter and Bologna have outperformed Roma since De Rossi arrived and his side are good value at 6/5 to edge this encounter.

Lorenzo Pellegrini to score first - 8/1

One of the big differences De Rossi has made at Roma is getting more from their midfield. The switch from a 3-5-2 to a 4-3-3 has improved Roma's attacking threat compared to the final days of Mourinho's spell.

Lorenzo Pellegrini has benefitted from that switch, as his role on the left side of De Rossi's midfield three has seen him push forward and get more involved in attacking play. The midfielder matched his goal tally from a half-season under Mourinho in De Rossi's first three games.

Since then, Pellegrini has popped up with key goals against Feyenoord, Monza and Sassuolo. He also scored for Italy in the last international break. The midfielder has seven goals in 14 appearances at the Olimpico this term, making him a tempting anytime goalscorer at 10/3.

However, clashes between these two tend to be close, with just three goals scored across the last four meetings. Four of Pellegrini's seven Serie A strikes have been openers, so back him to score first at 8/1.

Roma to win 1-0 - 6/1

With three of the last four meetings between these two finishing 1-0, expect this to be decided by a single goal. Roma look the more equipped side, especially with Lazio fresh from a 2-0 loss at Juventus.

Back De Rossi's side to edge this encounter, with half of Roma's home wins coming by a one-goal margin. A 1-0 home win is my final selection, which is priced at 6/1.
