Roma v Brighton: Tips, Predictions and Odds

Brighton have reached the Europa League last 16 in their maiden European campaign but the Seagulls face a tricky trip to resurgent Roma on Thursday.

The Italians lost on penalties to Sevilla in last season's Europa League final and they are targeting another deep run in the competition after replacing manager Jose Mourinho with Daniele De Rossi in January.

That decision paid immediate dividends as club legend De Rossi steered Roma to a penalty-shootout win over Feyenoord in February's Europa League play-off round.

Roma have also won six of their seven Serie A matches since Mourinho's exit and they are 11/10 to beat a Brighton side who topped a tough group featuring Marseille, Ajax and AEK Athens.

Roma v Brighton betting tips and predictions

Over 3.5 Goals – 2/1

Clean sheets have been a rarity for Brighton during Roberto De Zerbi's entertaining reign but they finished their Europa League group campaign with four straight wins, all by 1-0 or 2-0 scorelines.

The Seagulls' first two European games were high-scoring affairs as they lost 3-2 at home to AEK Athens and came from 2-0 down to earn a point in Marseille.

A cagey first leg against Roma looks unlikely given that Brighton have lost four of their last five away matches, conceding three goals at Fulham last weekend and four at Luton.

Their five wins in all competitions since Christmas were by margins of 4-2, 4-2, 5-2, 4-1 and 5-0 so over 3.5 goals looks a good bet at the Stadio Olimpico.

Roma's Europa League play-off tie against Feyenoord was tight, finishing 2-2 on aggregate, but goals have flowed freely in their Serie A games under new boss De Rossi.

Mourinho's tenure ended with a 3-1 loss at Milan and there have been over 2.5 goals in all seven of their league matches since then.

Four of Roma's last five have rewarded backers of over 3.5 goals and the exception was last month's 3-0 win away to Frosinone, who had 25 attempts at goal.

Paulo Dybala Anytime Goalscorer – 2/1

Roma's Argentina forward Paulo Dybala had been linked with a move away from the Italian capital in the past year or so but he is enjoying his football at the moment.

Dybala contributed a goal and an assist in the 4-1 weekend win at Monza, extending his hot streak since the turn of the year.

He has scored eight goals in seven Serie A appearances in 2024, racking up six shots at home to Atalanta in January and five in last month's 4-0 win over Cagliari.

Dybala claimed a hat-trick in his last home outing, a 3-2 victory against Torino, and his penalty-taking prowess makes him a tempting bet to find the net on Thursday.

Gianluca Mancini To Be Booked – 21/10

Roma centre-back Gianluca Mancini is no stranger to a yellow card, picking up 54 cautions in 156 Serie A starts since signing from Atalanta in 2019.

Mancini has been booked five times in his last 10 appearances in all competitions and two of those came in the Coppa Italia defeat to Roman rivals Lazio in January, when he was sent off in stoppage-time.

The defender tends to find himself in trouble in high-profile matches. He was booked in the league meetings with Lazio and Milan and has picked up yellow cards in both of Roma's defeats to runaway leaders Inter this season.

Brighton's fleet-footed forwards could cause problems for the 6ft 3in Mancini and he is an appealing price to be shown a card in the first leg.

Zeki Celik, who is likely to deputise at right-back with Rasmus Kristensen and Rick Karsdorp injured, is another Roma player for cards backers to consider at 5/2.

Celik may be a little rusty, having made only two starts and nine substitute appearances in Serie A this season, and he was booked three times in 372 minutes during Turkey's Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.
