After starting 2025 with a five-game winless sequence, Oldham Athletic travel to Rochdale with a spring in their step thanks to Saturday's come-from-behind 2-1 success away to AFC Fylde.
The Latics have lost only two of 14 National League away games, although one of those setbacks came on New Year’s Day when they were beaten 2-1 at Hartlepool.
Dale have been dogged by inconsistency - winning six and losing five of their last 11 National League fixtures.
However, they take plenty of confidence into the game, having won 4-0 at home to Yeovil Town in their last league encounter and made FA Trophy progress at the weekend, winning 2-1 away at Worthing.
Oldham draw no bet - 11/8
Rochdale and Oldham are among a group of several former EFL clubs battling for a return to the fourth tier and their key National League fixture could go the way of Latics, who look a tempting 11/8 wager on the draw no bet market.
Experienced Latics manager Micky Mellon has five promotions on his CV, including a fifth-tier title triumph with Fleetwood Town in the 2011-12 campaign.
The 52-year-old has been in the Oldham dugout since October 2023 and will be hoping for a big improvement on last season’s tenth place finish.
Mellon’s side have lost only six of 27 league games this season and are hoping to kick on with the assistance of some eye-catching January signings.
Oldham have snapped up midfielders Tom Pett and Jordan Rossiter on loan deals from Cheltenham Town and Shrewsbury Town respectively and also brought in attacker Billy Waters on a permanent deal after his release by Wrexham.
All three were in the Latics’ starting XI for Saturday’s 2-1 success at Fylde and they could have major roles to play over the rest of the season.
Rochdale have been nowhere near as active in the winter window and will be relying heavily on continued excellence of their Grenada international forward Kairo Mitchell, who tops their scoring charts with 12 league goals.
Mitchell netted from the penalty spot as Dale wrapped up their January league schedule with a 4-0 victory at home to Yeovil.
Three wins from the last four league games have taken Dale into the play-offs and there is scope for further progress because Jim McNulty’s side have played fewer games than all of the teams above them.
However, they might be fearing a setback against Oldham, who have been a bogey team in recent years.
Oldham are unbeaten in the last seven league games between these two teams and their superiority may be set to continue.
Mike Fondop to score anytime - 9/4
Oldham have been busy with their January recruitment, but they haven’t needed to concentrate on the centre-forward position because Mike Fondop has nailed down the position with 13 goals in 26 league appearances.
Former Wrexham, Chesterfield and Burton Albion frontman Fondop bagged a brace in the weekend win at Fylde and looks a solid 9/4 shot to add to his tally.
Over 2.5 goals - 19/20
Both teams are likely to push for the win and their positive mindsets should enhance the possibility of an entertaining, high-scoring game.
Seven of Oldham’s last ten fixtures have generated at least three goals, so it makes sense to side with over 2.5 goals at 19/20.
