Real Madrid v FC Salzburg: Prediction and Tips

Defending champions Real Madrid still have work to do to nail down a spot in the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League, but the visit of whipping boys FC Salzburg to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu should be the free hit they need to go through.

Real Madrid and Both Teams to Score - 6/4

La Liga leaders Real Madrid have made hard work of defending their UEFA Champions League title but Wednesday's home tie against FC Salzburg in their penultimate league phase clash looks like the ideal fixture.

Carlo Ancelotti's reigning champions have won three and lost three of their six games, leaving them precariously placed on nine points.

They will be grateful then that this week's opponents are FC Salzburg, out of the running to all intents and purposes with just three points to their name and a crippling goal difference of minus 15.

The Austrians have been on the wrong end of some serious hidings throughout the competition, losing 3-0 at Sparta Prague, 4-0 at home to Brest, 5-0 at Bayer Leverkusen and 3-0 at home to Paris Saint-Germain.

Their other loss was 2-0 at home to Dinamo Zagreb while, against the odds, they managed to produce a 3-1 win at Feyenoord on Matchday Four.

The defeat by PSG on 10th December was the final European act for head coach Pep Lijnders who was fired a week later after just six months in charge.

European batterings aside, Lijnders paid the price for not mounting any sort of a title challenge in the Bundesliga, with a 10-point gap to leaders Sturm Graz to be addressed when they return from their domestic winter break next month.

Thomas Letsch has succeeded Lijnders with the job of improving results with an incredibly young squad, who have found this elite level just too much.

This is pretty much a free hit for Letsch with virtually no prospect of qualification and they can at least land a blow in defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu.

If we know anything about Real Madrid of late it's that they are full of goals, though clean sheets are hard to come by.

At the weekend, they fell behind after just a minute at home to Las Palmas before roaring back to win 4-1 and they haven't kept a clean sheet in any of their six UEFA Champions League games.

Ancelotti's men have beaten Stuttgart (3-1), Borussia Dortmund (5-2) and Atalanta (3-2) while losing at Lille (1-0) and Liverpool (2-0) either side of a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of AC Milan.

They haven't kept a clean sheet in any of their last four La Liga outings, conceding seven goals in that run, so the Madrid win and both teams to score looks a shade of value.

Daouda Guindo To Be Booked - 7/4

Salzburg left-back Daouda Guindo can expect to be a busy man at the Bernabeu.

The Malian defender is in for a torrid evening up against Rodrygo, a battle that on paper looks one-sided.

Guindo will be tested, and one or two fouls too many are unlikely to go unpunished by Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg.

The 22-year-old has picked up yellow cards in two of his last four appearances for the Austrian side - including after just 35 minutes against PSG - and looks a fair bet to receive a yellow in the Spanish capital.

Under 10 Corners - 11/10

Real Madrid need to go for broke to get on to 12 points and improve their goal difference as they seek to achieve the highest possible position in the UEFA Champions League league phase.

They will control the game against Salzburg, should win and doubtless will register far more corners than their youthful opponents.

But the idea that the corner count goes through the roof doesn't actually tally.

Real average 5.5 corners per game in La Liga and 6.5 in Europe this season. Salzburg are averaging 3.3 corners per game in the UEFA Champions League, so set-pieces may not be as numerous as one might think.

Under 10 corners could well be the pick of the corner bets.
