Real Madrid v Athletic Bilbao: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Real Madrid enjoy a commanding lead in La Liga but they cannot afford to take their eye off the ball when Athletic Bilbao head to the Spanish capital on Sunday.

Their Basque visitors have their eyes on joining Europe’s top table next season and a positive result at the Bernabeu would enhance their chances of securing a top-four spot, so we could be in for an intriguing contest in the final instalment of Spanish top flight action this Easter weekend.

Real Madrid v Athletic Bilbao

Real Madrid v Athletic Bilbao betting tips and predictions

Under 2.5 goals @ 21/20

Real Madrid went into the international break having scored a total of eight goals in wins over Celta Vigo and Osasuna to give themselves an eight-point advantage at the top of the table, but it seems unlikely that they will go goal crazy against Athletic Bilbao.

Los Blancos will have to cope without the services of Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior, who overstepped the booking threshold before the break, and that should affect their potency in front of goal.

But more of a telling factor will be the quality of opposition the leaders will come up against as Athletic boast the second strongest defence in the Spanish top flight, having conceded just 26 goals this season, with Carlo Ancelotti’s team letting in 20.

Motivation will be high in the Athletic camp as they have eyes on finishing in the top four for the first time in ten years and would love a crack at next season’s Champions League.

They have kept clean sheets in six of their last eight league matches and while a shutout at the home of the leaders would be a huge achievement, and is perhaps unlikely, they can make things difficult for Madrid.

Ancelotti’s side had to battle for a 2-0 win in the reverse fixture at the start of the season and there is every chance that their task could prove difficult again, so the 21/20 that there will be fewer than three goals in the game looks attractive.

Jude Bellingham to score at any time @ 8/5

Vinicius Junior’s absence will put more pressure on Jude Bellingham to deliver the goods for Real Madrid, but the England star is capable of doing just that and should be backed at 8/5 to score, just as he did when he made his Los Blancos debut in the reverse fixture.

Injury and suspension mean that Bellingham’s influence for his club was not huge in the run-up to the international break, but he has had at least two efforts on goal in ten of his last 12 league appearances and should be champing at the bit to make a telling contribution.

Despite playing just one league game since 10th February, Bellingham still went into the weekend as the league’s top goalscorer with 16 and while confidence never appears to be an issue for a player who has turned into one of the world’s best players over the last year or two, an equaliser in England’s 2-2 friendly draw with Belgium should have still given him a lift.

Over 9.5 Corners @ 5/6

A draw would be classed as a good result for the visitors but they are handy when it comes to earning corners, so expect the line of 9.5 to be eclipsed on Sunday.

Only Real Madrid, Barcelona and Real Betis have earned a higher number of flag kicks than Athletic, who have posted an average of 5.38 per game in their 29 matches.

Madrid have had 6.1 per match but while they concede just 2.5 per game at home, their opponents on Sunday still post a figure of 5.21 per away game, so it seems sensible to chance that they will be able to earn more than a decent share when they head to the capital.
