Rangers v St Johnstone: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Rangers begin their Scottish League Cup defence on Saturday as they welcome St Johnstone to Ibrox.

The Gers suffered European disappointment in midweek as their hopes of reaching the UEFA Champions League group stages were dashed by Dynamo Kyiv.

The Ibrox outfit are yet to get going this season with just one win in four games across all competitions, while visitors St Johnstone come into the game after winning League Cup Group F and with four wins in six fixtures this term.

Rangers v St Johnstone betting tips and predictions

Rangers to win and both teams to score - 8/5

Rangers have a fantastic recent record against Saints with five wins in the last five meetings, and they haven’t conceded a single goal during that run.

The Glasgow giants can extend that winning streak but their run of clean sheets may well come to an end, as the Saints attack has been in solid form in the early stages of the season.

Rangers have just one win in four attempts this term but that victory did come in their only home game against Scottish opposition. Philippe Clement’s side have won their last four domestic home games but they have gone nine competitive outings without a clean sheet in front of their home supporters.

Saints have scored in all six of their games across all competitions, hitting 15 goals in total, and they also netted in all of their pre-season games and in their final three matches of the previous campaign.

Vaclav Cerny to score any time - 6/4

Rangers loan capture Vaclav Cerny has made a reasonable start to life in Glasgow with one goal in four appearances (one start).

The Czech international may come back into the starting side on Saturday after featuring from the bench against Dynamo and, if he is involved from the off, he looks a decent scorer option.

Cerny netted on his only start so far, against Motherwell in the Premiership, and he also provided an assist in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League tie.

Aaron Essel to be booked - 9/4

St Johnstone summer signing Aaron Essel looks a player worth keeping an eye on for any fans of card bets after a lively start to his career in Scotland.

The Ghanaian was booked on his debut against Brechin in this competition and also saw red in a defeat at Alloa.

The 19-year-old picked up a yellow card when Aberdeen visited McDiarmid Park in the first round of Premiership games - meaning he has three cards in five games so far for Saints.

Essel clearly likes to get involved in the physical side of the game as he is averaging 3.0 tackles per match and 2.0 fouls in the Premiership, and he looks the standout pick in the to be booked market.
