Rangers v Aberdeen: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Rangers will be aiming to end a disappointing domestic season on a high over the next few weeks, starting by gaining an overdue victory when they welcome Aberdeen to Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.

It has been a season of frustration for the Gers, who were unable to mount any kind of title challenge on champions Celtic, lost to the same opposition in the Scottish League Cup final and were infamously dumped out of the Scottish Cup by Championship outfit Queen's Park.

Talk of an impending takeover does offer some hope to the club's supporters ahead of next season and interim boss Barry Ferguson, who took over from the sacked Philippe Clement in February, will be keen to use these final three matches to further enhance his claims to be handed the reins on a permanent basis.

The first of those opportunities will come against Aberdeen, who unlike Rangers still have plenty to play for, as they are aiming to overhaul Hibernian and claim a third-place finish in the Premiership, as well as step up their preparations for the Scottish Cup final against Celtic at the end of the month.

Rangers v Aberdeen betting tips and predictions

Aberdeen or draw double chance - 13/10

Ferguson's hopes of landing the Rangers job on a permanent basis have been dented following an ongoing six-match winless run that includes a home defeat to Hibs and exiting the Europa League at the hands of Athletic Bilbao.

The Gers did claim a credible 1-1 draw with Celtic in last weekend's final Old Firm derby of the season, extending their unbeaten run against their fierce rivals to three matches, but they could be as many as 20 points behind the champions by the time they kick-off on Sunday.

Ibrox, usually such a fortress for Rangers, has been anything but over recent months, as they have failed to win any of their last seven games at the venue, a run that extends back to early February and predates Ferguson's time as interim manager.

With only two home matches remaining in the season - this clash and the midweek showdown with Dundee United - Ferguson will be desperate to break his Ibrox duck, but the Gers are unlikely to have things their own way against Aberdeen.

In what has been an up and down season, Aberdeen appear to be on an upward trajectory despite last week's defeat at St Mirren, as prior to that 1-0 loss they were unbeaten in eight.

That run had not only catapulted Jimmy Thelin's side back into the race to finish third, but also seen them make it through to the upcoming Scottish Cup final and a chance to land a first major piece of silverware since 2014.

While the impending trip to Hampden may be on supporters' minds, Thelin is sure to have his team's focus on overhauling Hibs and finishing third, which means there should be no letting up when they head to Ibrox.

The Dons have taken four points off Rangers already this season, won 3-1 at Ibrox last term, and with so much more to play for than their hosts, may offer the value option in the double chance market.

Under 2.5 goals - 6/4

Across their ongoing seven-match winless run on home soil, Rangers have remarkably only scored twice, while all but one of those games - a 2-1 defeat to Motherwell at the start of March - have featured a maximum of just two goals.

Queen's Park, St Mirren, Fenerbahce, Athletic Bilbao and Hibs have all kept clean-sheets at Ibrox during that time and Aberdeen could become the latest side to frustrate Rangers in their own backyard.

The Dons are unlikely to be too expansive on Sunday - they rarely are on their travels given they have averaged less than a goal-per-game across their 17 road fixtures in the Premiership this season.

Their last two fixtures - at home to Hibs and away to St Mirren - have featured a combined two goals - while under 2.5 goals would have been a winning bet in four of their last six Premiership fixtures, a theme that can continue on Sunday.

Ante Palaversa to be booked - 11/10

Aberdeen have been one of the more combative sides in this season's Premiership, as only St Mirren (91) have picked up more yellow cards than the Dons total of 82 heading into this weekend's action.

Of those 82, midfielder Ante Palaversa has received 11 - the joint-most in the Scottish top-flight this season - with three of those cautions coming across his last four league appearances, including one in last month's 2-2 draw with Rangers at Pittodrie.

With Rangers likely to dominate possession despite their poor home record, Palaversa may have to get stuck in even more than normal, increasing the likelihood of the Croatian taking his card count for the season to a dozen.
