The first marquee signing of the Boehly era, Sterling joined Chelsea from Manchester City with the view to enhancing his own career and taking his game to another level.

Advance two years and the 29-year-old finds himself being pushed out of the door at Stamford Bridge, with new manager Maresca declaring that Sterling must leave if he is to play regular first-team football.

Featuring in all six pre-season matches, Sterling's omission from Chelsea's opening Premier League fixture was a great surprise and his representatives issued a statement demanding clarity regarding his future. If it wasn't made clear before, Maresca has made it pretty transparent since.

The Blues announced their 10th summer recruit with the arrival of Joao Felix from Atletico Madrid, a deal which saw Conor Gallagher move in the other direction.

Chelsea's extensive recruitment drive now means they're having to drastically trim a bloated squad and Sterling is set to be one of the biggest casualties.

Man Utd have emerged as contenders to sign the four-time Premier League winner, with various media outlets claiming the Red Devils have held talks with Chelsea over a potential swap deal with Jadon Sancho.

Mikel Arteta's Arsenal are also being linked with a move for Sterling, with the winger having worked with the Gunners' Basque boss during his time at Man City.

A number of Saudi Arabian outfits wouldn't struggle to match Sterling's current figures and yet at 29, Sterling still feels he has plenty to offer in Europe and a move to Saudi may jeopardise his hopes of returning to the England setup.

Worst-case scenario for Sterling is that Chelsea are unable to sanction his departure and the winger remains in the reserves until January, which would be a sorry state of affairs for an individual of his calibre.
