Premier League final day permutations

Ahead of the final day of the 2024/25 Premier League season, we assess the all-important permutations concerning the race for Europe and to finish in the top half.

Race for Europe

UEFA Champions League

The race for European qualification next season looks primed to be the most compelling part of the final day of the 2024/25 Premier League season.

Thanks to England's coefficient ranking, the top five in the Premier League will qualify for the league phase of next season's UEFA Champions League.

Liverpool and Arsenal have already secured their place in the top two, with third position down to fifth position yet to be determined.

Five teams will battle it out for a place in the top five on the final day of the Premier League campaign - Manchester City, Newcastle, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.

UEFA Europa League

This season, the two UEFA Europa League places for English teams will be allocated to the team who finishes in sixth place in the Premier League along with the FA Cup winners Crystal Palace.

As things stand ahead of the final day of the Premier League season, one of Newcastle, Chelsea, Aston Villa or Nottingham Forest will finish in sixth position and qualify for the UEFA Europa League.

UEFA Conference League

The one UEFA Conference League place for English teams is allocated to the winners of the EFL Cup, who this year are Newcastle United.

However, with Newcastle already in line to directly qualify for the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League via their Premier League position, there is a possibility a UEFA Conference League place will be awarded to the team who finishes eighth in England's top flight this term.

This scenario will unfold if Chelsea win this season's Conference League Final against Real Betis and either of the following two scenarios transpire:

  • Chelsea finish 7th in the table. This would happen if Enzo Maresca's side lose to Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa get at least a draw at Man Utd.
  • Chelsea finish 6th and Newcastle finish 7th. This would happen if the Blues lose at Forest, Villa get at least a draw at Man Utd and Newcastle lose at home to Everton by three more goals than Chelsea lose at Forest, so the Magpies fall below the Londoners on goal difference.

This means that both Brighton and Brentford have an incentive to win on the final day of the Premier League season with both teams in with a chance of finishing eighth in the table.
