Portugal v France Prediction, Tips and Odds: Maignan to help keep Selecao at bay

Portugal and France meet in the last eight of the Euros on Friday in a repeat of the 2016 final and Les Bleus can gain revenge for a shock loss in that showdown.

On that occasion, cheered on by captain Cristiano Ronaldo after his early withdrawal through injury, the Selecao sneaked a 1-0 AET win, breaking French hearts in Paris.

On Monday, it was Ronaldo shedding tears after seeing his penalty saved by Jan Oblak, but he stepped up to score his team's first spot-kick as they overcame Slovenia in a shootout to progress through the last 16.

The 39-year-old is yet to score in open play in Germany, and his profligacy in front of goal means his place could be in jeopardy ahead of potentially his final Euros appearance.

France were unimpressive in beating Belgium 1-0 on Monday and have generally been underwhelming so far.

France to qualify - 4/6

Despite his success, France boss Didier Deschamps continues to be derided at home for his defensive tactics. However, a run of tournament results that has seen Les Bleus reach three finals suggests he might know what he's doing.

The biggest blips on his international management CV are arguably his team's performances at the Euros. In addition to losing the 2016 final, they also slipped up in the last 16 to Switzerland three years ago.

Deschamps has occasionally released the tactical handbrake, but is yet to set his side free in Germany, grinding through the group stages and just about getting past Belgium courtesy of Jan Vertonghen's own goal.

Portugal have played with more expression, but were frustrated by a well-organised Slovenian side who spurned their own chances before the Selecao succeeded on penalties.

These countries possess two of the strongest squads in the competition, prompting the possibility that either Deschamps or Roberto Martinez could spring a tactical surprise.

However, that's unlikely and a battle of attrition beckons in Hamburg. That style of game should suit France and they could be the ones to meet either Spain or Germany in the semis next Tuesday.

Mike Maignan - over 3.5 saves - 7/4

Goalkeeper Diogo Costa was Portugal's eventual hero on Monday, saving late from Benjamin Sesko before keeping out all three of the penalties he faced in the shootout.

The Porto man could be busy again but so could his opposite number Mike Maignan, who is averaging three saves a game at the competition, which is double the number of his Portuguese counterpart.

Maignan had to bide his time behind Hugo Lloris, but the AC Milan keeper is now Les Bleus' undisputed number one and is arguably the best keeper on the planet.

Portugal have attempted the second most shots in the competition (74) and 21 of those have been on target, so Maignan will need to be vigilant on Friday and is a good price to make over 3.5 saves.

Pepe to be booked - 21/10

Pepe has gone from being Real Madrid's enforcer to one of the game's grand old stagers, swapping his angry young man act for calm and composure.

The 41-year-old has largely looked comfortable at the tournament, but his age showed in extra-time against Slovenia when his slip allowed Sesko to streak clear, only for Costa to thwart the Leipzig forward.

Martinez could give Pepe additional time off to recover, but he is likely start in a back four alongside Ruben Dias.

He is still to receive a card in the tournament, but Kylian Mbappe and Marcus Thuram's pace mean his years could catch up with him in the form of a caution.
