Portsmouth v Oxford Utd: Tips, Predictions and Odds

League One leaders Portsmouth are hard to beat at Fratton Park but they’ll be wary of an Oxford side scrapping to stay in the play-off race.

Portsmouth v Oxford Utd tips and predictions

Winning Margin - Portsmouth By 1 Goal @ 11/4

The last three meetings between League One big-hitters Portsmouth and Oxford United have ended in draws, most recently 2-2 at the Kassam Stadium a month ago.

Eight of the last 11 clashes between these two rivals since October 2019 have ended in draws.

And the other three games in that sequence were settled by just the odd goal.

If there is one consistent characteristic of this fixture it’s that it is invariably tight, quite often too close to call.

Since Pompey are super strong at Fratton Park and Oxford unreliable at the back, back the hosts to nick it. Swerve the odds-on 90-minute bet on John Mousinho’s men and take a chance on the Winning Margin market, with the 11/4 Pompey to win by one goal standing out.

Portsmouth, under ex-Oxford defender Mousinho, continue to pass tests and profit from the inconsistencies of those below them, including Oxford.

They go into this weekend with a seven-point cushion over nearest challengers Derby and Bolton, both of whom have hit the brakes at the wrong time. Portsmouth drew last time, 0-0 at Charlton, and still extended their lead with Derby and Bolton suffering defeats.

The Hampshire sleeping giants have lost only twice at home in the league in the last year and have won three in a row at Fortress Fratton, 4-1 successes over Northampton and Reading sandwiching a 3-1 triumph over Cambridge.

Oxford have struggled since Des Buckingham replaced Liam Manning at the end of November with five wins in 19 league games.

They have mustered just one clean sheet since Christmas and against Pompey’s potent front line that could be pivotal.

Paddy Lane anytime scorer @ 3/1

There are goals to be had from all across the park at Portsmouth with eight members of Mousinho’s squad having found the net at least three times this season.

16-goal Colby Bishop, the man who leads the line, is into double figures for the sixth successive season and is just four goals away from matching last season’s personal best haul.

Bishop inevitably heads all the goalscorer markets, with Paddy Lane a value alternative at 3/1 in anytime scorer betting.

Lane, the Northern Ireland striker, has enjoyed a meteoric rise since leaving Fleetwood for Fratton Park just over 12 months ago.

He took a while to settle but now is scoring goals for fun and has become a regular in the Northern Ireland side.

Lane, who generally plays on the left side of the attacking trio behind Bishop, has got 11 for the season, including four in his last five, and is bound to get chances against an Oxford defence which is the most porous of any side in the top 10.

Over 4.5 Oxford Utd corners @ 6/5

Oxford are stronger now than they were a month ago when they drew 2-2 with Portsmouth at the Kassam Stadium.

They were missing the likes of Sam Long, Billy Bodin and Josh Murphy while Jay Matete was a deadline-day addition.

Yet they still gave Pompey a decent game, a match in which they were happy to play without the ball, boasting under 38 per cent possession.

A similar figure can be expected at Fratton Park but they do get forward on the break, create chances and win corners. They managed six in that match in Oxford and are averaging 5.1 a game this season.

Indeed, away from home they actually average 5.7 so it’s well worth believing they can clear the 4.5 corners mark.
