Port Vale v Wrexham: Prediction, Tips and Odds

As one of the strongest teams left in the EFL Trophy, Wrexham will fancy their chances of going all the way, but they face a testing trip to Port Vale on Tuesday evening.

They finished top of Northern Section Group B, defeating Salford (2-1) and Wolves Under-21s (3-0) and drawing 1-1 away to Vale, who are now their opponents in the round of 16.

The Welsh side won 1-0 at home to Crewe Alexandra in the second round and will expect a stern test from Vale, who are sixth in League Two having taken 10 points from their last four league games.

Vale triumphed 1-0 away to fourth-tier rivals Doncaster Rovers in the EFL Trophy second round and are targeting further progress as they aim to win the competition for the third time in their history.

Port Vale v Wrexham betting tips and predictions

Wrexham to win - 17/20

Wrexham boosted their League One promotion hopes at the weekend with a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Crawley Town and they can take another step on the road to Wembley by defeating Vale in the EFL Trophy third round.

The Red Dragons are determined to finish the season strongly and flexed their muscles in the transfer market last week by snapping up strikers Jay Rodriguez and Sam Smith on permanent deals from Burnley and Reading.

Rodriguez and Smith were thrust straight into the starting line-up against Crawley, but could be among a bunch of players rested for the trip to the Potteries.

Manager Phil Parkinson has consistently made several changes for EFL Trophy nights and may not change that approach until a later stage of the competition.

However, given the quality and quantity of players at Parkinson’s disposal, there is every chance of the Welsh side getting the job done without need of a penalty shootout.

Vale are going reasonably well in the League Two promotion race with 48 points accrued from 28 games and approach the game in good spirits after Saturday’s 2-1 victory at home to Accrington Stanley.

Their weekend win came about despite the considerable inconvenience of losing defender Tom Sang to a 13th-minute red card.

Vale worked hard with a man down and were rewarded with an important three points, but the experience is likely to have taken a physical toll on some of the players.

Valiants boss Darren Moore may feel compelled to make wholesale changes and, if it boils down to a battle of second string sides, Wrexham’s deep squad could give them the edge.

Steven Fletcher to score anytime - 21/10

One of the Wrexham players expected to come back into the starting XI is veteran striker Steven Fletcher, who has played a super sub role on numerous occasions, but who will be looking forward to a longer period of action.

The former Scotland international has notched in five of his last ten appearances and looks an overpriced 21/10 shot to bag his first EFL Trophy goal of the campaign.

Both teams to score - 4/5

Wrexham have scored in each of their last 15 matches, but they might need at least a couple of goals against Vale, who carry plenty of threat in the final third.

The League Two side have scored eight goals across their last four fixtures and can find the net against their visitors for the second time in the competition.
