Plymouth Argyle v Oxford United: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Plymouth Argyle and Oxford United get set to square off at Home Park in the Championship on Tuesday after very different weekends in the FA Cup.

New Argyle boss Miron Muslic looked on from the stands as his side stunned Brentford 1-0 at the Gtech Stadium, whereas Oxford boss Gary Rowett made changes galore at Exeter and suffered a 3-1 defeat to the League One side.

Plymouth to win - 31/20

Miron Muslic will get a hero's ovation when he takes his place in the Home Park technical area for the first time on Tuesday night, and he hopes that good will is translated into a winning performance.

The Bosnian-born Austrian was named the successor to Wayne Rooney last week and while wholly aware that he is taking over the team bottom of the Championship, he would surely have been delighted, and maybe a little surprised, to see his new charges win 1-0 at Premier League Brentford in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Muslic will have been made acutely aware that Argyle hadn't won an away game since April, so he can only be encouraged by what he saw.

That win at Brentford also followed draws against Bristol City and Stoke City, gutsy efforts to further confirm to Muric that escaping relegation is anything but an impossible challenge.

Indeed, he inherits a side who have kept back-to-back clean sheets for the first time since October 2023 and given that they boast - by a distance - the worst defence in the second tier, that will offer more encouragement to the recently-sacked Cercle Brugge boss.

That Argyle delivered under their caretaker Kevin Nancekivell at the Gtech on Saturday should surprise no one, including Muslic.

Nancekivell bleeds Argyle green and never fails to lift the dressing room whenever he takes on caretaker head coach duties.

Muslic will tap into Nancekivell's knowhow and experience and be confident that given Argyle's relatively decent form at Home Park - 17 of their 20 points have been accrued at home - they should fancy their chances against Oxford.

Oxford themselves are major improvers since Gary Rowett replaced Des Buckingham, with 10 points from their last 12 in the league, including a rare away win, 1-0 at Millwall.

Rowett has tweaked the system and seemed happy enough to sacrifice FA Cup progress judging by the changes he made in defeat at Exeter on Saturday.

The costly blow, however, was the red card to key wideman Tyler Goodrham, which rules him out of the trip to Devon.

Adam Randell to have over 0.5 shots on target - 9/4

Plymouth average almost twice as many shots at home than away this season - 13.9 compared to 7.3.

Oxford, meanwhile, concede an average of 17.3 shots per game on their travels - only three clubs ship more away from home.

It's not easy to know quite what to expect from new boss Muslic but Nancekivell's thumb prints should be all over the Austrian's first game in charge, and that should mean a show of positive intent from Plymouth.

It is only their home form which is keeping them from being cut adrift so expect the shots to rain in with midfielder Adam Randell taken to rattle off a few.

Randell, hailed a better free-kick taker than Rooney by the former England captain earlier this season, has one league goal to his name this term. But he is averaging 1.2 shots per home game and can get at least one on target against Oxford.

Corners Race To 7 - Neither - 20/21

Positivity from the home camp doesn't necessarily mean a stack of corners, which is not an Argyle strong suit.

This season they are averaging just 3.2 corners per game while Oxford are only averaging 3.6.

It would be against the script for either side to reach seven corners and a fair shout that neither do. In the Corners Race market it's a favourable 20/21 chance that both teams fall shy of the seven mark.
