Plymouth Argyle battled well in recent matches against Sunderland and West Brom and may have enough to frustrate an improving Luton Town on Friday evening.
Following a 1-0 loss at The Hawthorns last Saturday, a return to Home Park will be a positive for the Pilgrims as they beat then league leaders Sunderland 3-2 in their last outing there.
They will take motivation from their performances against both the Black Cats and the Baggies and should carry that momentum into a clash with Town as Argyle bid for their second Championship win of the campaign.
The Hatters, like Plymouth, have also endured a difficult start to the season. Tipped by many for an immediate return to the Premier League, Rob Edwards’ men took a while to secure their first league win of the campaign.
However, Luton are showing signs of improvement, suggesting a close match could play out at Home Park.
Draw @ 5/2
It was only a matter of time before Luton started improving given that they held on to a lot of the side which was relegated from the Premier League last term and back-to-back wins over Millwall and Sheffield Wednesday were deserved results after a barren run.
However, they still looked vulnerable at times in those victories and required two late goals from Carlton Morris to secure the win against the Owls, suggesting there is still scope for further improvement from Edwards and his side.
Therefore, three points at Home Park is far from guaranteed, especially as Plymouth beat Sunderland there just two weeks ago.
They reverted to the norm with a loss at West Brom next time, but there was enough to like in that defeat to suggest manager Wayne Rooney may finally be getting a tune out of his side.
Argyle matched the Baggies' shots and shots on target counts of 17 and four in last Saturday’s defeat, while also having more possession than their hosts, which is no mean feat given West Brom are now top of the Championship and remain unbeaten.
Only four Championship teams have managed more shots on target than Argyle’s 25 and they can be dangerous on the occasions they do attack, hinting that they can hold their own against the Hatters, even if Rooney’s men have just five points this term.
With both Luton and Plymouth improving with each game, each may be content with a point at Home Park, making the draw, which has landed in two of the past three meetings between the pair, an appealing bet.
Carlton Morris anytime goalscorer @ 15/8
A goalless start to the season saw Morris dropped to the bench for Luton’s trip to Wednesday last Saturday, but he is sure to be reinstated to the starting XI on Friday after his immense impact once introduced.
The Hatters struggled to create chances without their talisman, having just five shots in the first half, but found their feet once Morris was introduced in the 60th minute.
It was his brace which cancelled out Barry Bannan’s opener to secure the three points for Luton and he could get more chances to pick up a third goal of the campaign now back in the starting line-up, especially against a side who have been sliced through with regularity this term.
Plymouth’s 1.92 expected goals against is the highest in the Championship and is almost one whole goal higher than next-worst Portsmouth.
Rooney’s tendency to prioritise his attack has shone through at Home Park and Edwards' side has all of the experience and nous to exploit a weak defence and create chances in Friday’s clash.
Given Morris will be riding the momentum from his sensational brace in Luton’s comeback win and the fact that he netted 20 goals in the Hatters’ last Championship season, he is worth backing to exploit that weak defence at Home Park.
Joe Edwards to be booked @ 15/4
Alfie Doughty is undoubtedly Luton’s go-to creator. The wing-back notched eight Premier League assists last term and he has created eight more chances in the Championship this season than any of his Hatters’ team-mates.
Luton will look to give him the ball at every occasion on Friday, meaning Plymouth right-back Joe Edwards could be in for a busy evening at Home Park.
The Argyle defender has already been carded three times in five Championship games this term, including in each of the last two matches, and he could find his name in the referee’s book once more on Friday.
