Peru v Chile: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Chile look well placed to get their Copa America campaign off to a winning start by claiming a Group A victory over Peru in Arlington, Texas.

World champions Argentina have taken a grip on the section with a 2-0 win over new boys Canada, but Chile can keep up with the pace and replicate the 2-0 win they posted against Peru in a World Cup qualifier in October.

Peru v Chile betting tips and predictions

Chile to win - 5/4

With World Cup winners Argentina in their group and already three points to the good following their opening win over debutants Canada, many observers will feel Peru and Chile will be fighting it out for second place in Group A at the Copa America.

And it looks set to be Chile who can gain the initiative in that race when they face off in Arlington, Texas in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Peru have put together some decent friendly results lately and are unbeaten in their last five matches, but that does not really tell the story.

South America is in the middle of a World Cup qualifying campaign and their recent results, against the usual strong opposition, have been pretty woeful.

They have scored just one goal in their last six qualifiers and that came in a 1-1 draw last time out at home to Venezuela, who are one of the weakest teams on the continent.

That lack of goals looks set to be a problem as they look to get out of the group and it would be no surprise if Chile were able to gain the upper hand in their opening clash.

Ricardo Gareca is at the Chile helm - he took Peru to the 2018 World Cup - and his side should be confident they can replicate the 2-0 victory they posted against the Peruvians in October.

That is one of just three victories they have posted in their last 10 matches, but there have been a couple of eye-catching friendly results that should have boosted their confidence and look strong form.

They beat Albania, who have demonstrated their battling qualities at Euro 2024, 3-0 in a meeting in Parma, Italy and there was no disgrace in a 3-2 defeat to a strong France side in Marseille.

Victor Davila to score anytime - 7/2

The Chilean attack is set to boast the familiar face of former Arsenal and Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez in Arlington while veteran Eduardo Vargas also brings plenty of experience, but one player worth keeping an eye on is Victor Davila.

He is expected to operate down the right of a three-man midfield behind Vargas and it was a system that worked perfectly when the CSKA Moscow forward scored twice in a 3-0 win over Paraguay in their last friendly.

Davila was also on hand to score in each of his last two games in the Russian Premier League, so confidence should not be an issue as he looks to make his presence felt on the big stage.

Chile to win 2-0 - 8/1

Peru’s lack of potency up front could cost them dearly at this summer’s Copa and they may not have the striking power to threaten the Chile defence.

All but one of Peru’s last 10 matches has produced fewer than three goals and it seems sensible to think that this may be another one, particularly with it being the first match in a four-team group.

But Chile look to have the edge and, having beaten Peru 2-0 in their last meeting, there looks a decent chance that scoreline will be repeated.
