The United States came into the women’s football tournament at the Olympics as favourites and with a point to prove, having claimed the most recent of their four gold medals in London back in 2012 and also having suffered a disappointing World Cup.

So far they have not disappointed and the fact they have already beaten semi-final opponents Germany 4-1 in the pool stage should give Emma Hayes’ side a significant advantage as they look to claim a place in the gold-medal match.

Hayes has been in the job for only a few months, but there have been signs of progress as they have claimed successes in both the Concacaf Gold Cup and SheBelieves Cup and demonstrated in both competitions that they have the ability to grind out results.

The Americans’ recent resurgence has been forged on strong foundations having conceded just two goals in their last seven games, so Germany know they will have to be at the top of their game to give themselves a chance.

Both teams had extra-time to deal with in the quarter-finals - the USWNT beat Japan 1-0 while Germany saw off reigning champions Canada on penalties - but it appears the Americans are the outfit who have the edge.

Even though a victory of the scale of their group meetings appears unlikely, USA should book their place in the final inside 90 minutes.

With their earlier meeting at the Olympics featuring five goals, many would think that we are in for an entertaining clash in Lyon, but this meeting, with a lot more at stake, could be considerably more cagey.

Before their goalless draw against the Canadians, Germany’s previous nine matches had featured at least three goals, but this looks like another match that will buck that particular trend.

Horst Hrubesch’s team look likely to try and stay in contention for as long as possible after their earlier 4-1 humbling, and the United States may be quite content to grind it out.

They did that in their quarter-final against Japan when Trinity Rodman’s extra-time goal earned them a 1-0 win and they will anticipate a tougher game against the Germans this time.

Three of the four quarter-finals featured just one normal-time goal between them, so don’t be surprised if the match becomes a war of attrition and there are not many goals.

Even though it is not anticipated to be a free-flowing match in which opportunities are plentiful, it is still worth taking a chance on Rodman getting on the scoresheet again.

The Washington Spirit forward has found the net three times in the competition, including the first in the USWNT’s win over Germany, so the 22-year-old’s confidence should be sky high.

She popped up with the winner against Japan just when the Americans needed it in extra time and manager Hayes will have plenty of faith that if the chances come, Rodman will be able to take them.
