Nottingham Forest have lifted the EFL Cup on four occasions and they can pass a tough opening test in this season’s competition by defeating Newcastle at the City Ground on Wednesday night.
The Tricky Trees were EFL Cup semi-finalists in 2022/23 but have not contested the final since 1992 when they were beaten 1-0 by Manchester United.
Newcastle were runners-up to Manchester United in 2023 and have reached the quarter-finals or better in three of the last four seasons. However, they have never lifted the trophy.
Nottingham Forest to win - 21/10
Nottingham Forest are the seventh most successful team in EFL Cup history and they can take a first step in 2024/25 by registering a home win over Newcastle.
Both teams might have appreciated an easier second round draw but Forest have had some fairly recent EFL Cup successes over the Magpies, knocking them out in the 2017/18 and 2018/19 campaigns.
Forest have spent much of the last two seasons focusing on Premier League consolidation but they hope to kick on in the first full season under Nuno Espirito Santo and have made a solid start, drawing 1-1 at home to Bournemouth and winning 1-0 at Southampton.
Newcastle have faced the same teams and posted exactly the same results, defeating Saints by a single goal on Tyneside and drawing 1-1 with Bournemouth on the south coast.
Therefore everything points to a tight contest but Forest have the benefit of home advantage and look slightly overpriced 21/10 shots to win without needing a penalty shootout.
Jota Silva anytime goalscorer - 15/4
Fringe players from both clubs are sure to be given opportunities and Forest fans will be eager to get a proper look at Portuguese winger Jota Silva, who joined the club from Vitoria Guimaraes this summer.
Silva is 25 years old but had a breakthrough season for Guimaraes last term, scoring 15 times in all competitions.
He earned his first senior caps for Portugal in a couple of friendlies earlier this year, featuring in the 5-2 success at home to Sweden and the 2-0 loss away to Slovenia, but missed out on a place in Roberto Martinez’s Euro 2024 squad.
However, Silva has progressed at a rapid rate over the last 12 months and will be keen to impress on his first outing in front of Forest’s home supporters.
Silva made his Forest debut as a late substitute in Saturday’s 1-0 success at Southampton but he could have a bigger impact against Newcastle and looks a tempting 15/4 wager to get on the scoresheet.
Kieran Trippier to be carded - 9/2
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is expected to make wholesale changes including a probable recall to the starting lineup for England international full-back Kieran Trippier.
After a busy summer Trippier was given time off to recover mentally and physically and, as a result, he is behind some of his team-mates in terms of match sharpness.
Trippier was booked twice at Euro 2024 and he looks an overpriced 9/2 shot to be carded against Forest.
