Only goal difference separates Newport and Chesterfield in the League Two table after 11 matches and the Spireites may find things tougher at Rodney Parade than the prices suggest.
Chesterfield were sent off pre-season title favourites in League Two on the back of winning the National League last term, but the Spireites are yet to live up to that billing.
With only 11 games gone, there is still plenty of time for Paul Cook to transform their fortunes but they have won only three times - being held to six draws - and have plenty of work to do before they can be considered potential champions.
They head to Newport on Friday hoping to snap a run of three straight 2-2 draws while the Exiles are bidding to respond to back-to-back defeats against Bradford and Harrogate.
However, Newport have been much more convincing at Rodney Parade, where they have taken 12 points from five home league games, and they are unlikely to go down without a fight.
Only goal difference splits the pair in the fourth-tier standings after 11 rounds of fixtures and that means this could be a tightly-knit encounter.
Newport or draw double chance - 11/10
Chesterfield are odds-on for victory on their trip to Wales despite the fact that they have won only three of their opening 11 league games and are level on points with hosts Newport.
There is a strong feeling that at some point Chesterfield, who were pre-season title favourites, will click into gear and go on a run that will catapult them into playoff contention.
However, they have shared the spoils in six of their 11 outings and three straight 2-2 draws with Bromley, Walsall and Notts County shows there are some defensive flaws to address.
Cook’s side have an abundance of attacking quality - they have netted 19 times in 11 outings - but they must tighten things up at the back before they can be considered one of the league’s elite.
Chesterfield have produced two of their best performances on the road, winning 5-0 at Crewe and 3-0 at Doncaster.
However, 1-0 defeats at Gillingham and Port Vale, plus a 2-2 draw at Bromley, shows that they can have their off days too, something Newport will be crossing their fingers for.
The Exiles are extremely leaky themselves, having conceded 21 goals across their 11 matches, but they have been pretty efficient on home soil.
Newport have picked up 12 of their 15 points at home, winning four of their five outings at Rodney Parade, and that includes a 3-1 victory over second-placed Doncaster.
Manager Nelson Jardim has tried to adopt a possession-based approach and that is why Newport have proved inconsistent.
But their home form may be worth clutching onto and they look a big price at odds-against to avoid defeat at their beloved Welsh base.
Aaron Wildig to score at anytime - 11/2
Newport have scored in all five home league games this season, netting a total of 12 goals at Rodney Parade, and they are likely to at least breach a Chesterfield side that have kept one clean sheet in seven.
At 11/2, Exiles midfielder Aaron Wildig looks like the player overpriced to get on the scoresheet for the hosts.
The 33-year-old is currently Newport’s leading scorer with four goals and he has netted in three of their five home outings, in 3-1 wins over Accrington and Salford and with a consolation strike against Port Vale.
Wildig is showing that he has an excellent eye for goal and he may be able to bolster his tally against the inconsistent Spireites.
Over 10 corners - 11/10
Goals look guaranteed given the defensive deficiencies on show and with a high-octane affair should come plenty of corners, with over 10 making plenty of appeal at 11/10.
There were 12 corners in Newport’s latest 1-0 defeat at Harrogate while the corner tallies in Chesterfield’s last four matches read 14, eight, 12 and 14.
Both teams will fancy getting in on the action with a couple of goals, so this end-to-end encounter should see plenty of set pieces awarded.
