Newcastle v Wolves: Tips, Predictions & Odds

Midweek FA Cup victors Newcastle and Wolves clash at St James' Park, knowing a slip-up could be devastating in the chase for a top-six finish.

Draw or Wolves Double Chance @ 5/6

While Eddie Howe's work at Newcastle remains under the tightest scrutiny, nothing but praise is being chucked at Wolves' boss Gary O'Neil, who can earn more plaudits by avoiding defeat on Tyneside.

You'd have got long odds at the start of term on Wolves being above Newcastle in the Premier League table after 26 rounds of matches, but that's the reality as the Old Gold enjoy their best top-flight season in years.

While Newcastle will be frustrated at only being on the fringes of the top-six battle - they are tenth and seven points adrift of Manchester United in sixth - Wolves will be thrilled to bits to be a point and a place better off than their big-spending hosts.

O'Neil's men have to be travelling north with confidence, having lost just twice since before Christmas and, on Wednesday night, booked their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals for just the second time in 20 years with a 1-0 win over Brighton.

Those two defeats in 13 matches in all competitions also came at Molineux, which means that on the road, they are unbeaten in six, their most recent road trips yielding a 4-2 win at Chelsea and 2-1 success at Tottenham.

Newcastle have also picked up after a ropey December and have lost only one of their last seven, a 4-1 humbling at Arsenal last weekend.

However, they were taken all the way to penalties by Blackburn in the FA Cup on Tuesday, and their last two home games have seen them held 4-4 by Luton and 2-2 by Bournemouth.

Howe's side have not won in four at home and conceded 12 goals in that quartet of fixtures.

They miss Nick Pope in goal, while Sven Botman is some way from being fully fit. Wolves are missing danger man Matheus Cunha and top scorer Hwang Hee-chan, but they won't change the way they play and have more than enough class on the break to hurt the Magpies.

Pablo Sarabia Goal or Assist @ 8/5

In the absence of Hwang or Cunha, O'Neil is going to want big games from the likes of Pedro Neto, Pablo Sarabia and Jean Bellegarde.

There is pace and movement about Wolves on the counter, whoever the manager picks, and certainly Sarabia has found his feet.

The former Sevilla and PSG forward has only made 13 starts this season as he has struggled to command a starting place but now looks nailed on, especially with two goals scored in his last five league appearances.

He also has six league assists, including in recent away wins at Brentford and Tottenham.

Against this Newcastle defence, which has rarely looked more uncomfortable since Howe took the reins, Sarabia's involvement in a Wolves goal looks like a fair bet.

Anthony Gordon to be booked @ 11/4

Gordon's record of eight goals and five assists in 25 starts has turned him into a star on Tyneside.

A goal and effectively the winning penalty at Blackburn in the FA Cup on Tuesday only added to his reputation for becoming a big-match player.

But with the good comes the less endearing, the number of yellow cards he picks up, and the ex-Everton star looks a decent price at 11/4 to find his way into referee Tim Robinson's notebook.

Gordon has managed ten yellows across the four competitions Newcastle have been involved in this season.

He is a first line of defence and will put in lazy tackles to stop breaks, but accusations that he can still go to ground too easily continue to follow him, and that's a habit refs are being told to clamp down on.
