Newcastle v West Ham: Tips, Predictions and Odds

Europa League quarter-finalists West Ham need to put European ambitions on the back burner at Newcastle, who are smarting from back-to-back losses before the international break.

Draw or West Ham Double Chance @ 10/11

Newcastle, in 10th, welcome West Ham - three places and four points better off - to St James’ Park in a big game for European qualification places.

The Magpies are paying the price for a ropey run either side of Christmas and have suddenly lost their mojo at home while looking vulnerable at the back.

The Hammers have recovered from a six-game winless run at the turn of the year, and although they are currently unbeaten in four Premier League games, they have won just two of their last 10.

What seems certain is that this game produces goals. Historically it has - the earlier meeting this season at the London Stadium in October ended 2-2.

The last six meetings between the sides have produced 25 goals with both teams scoring in all of those matches.

Assuming goals is the easy bit; figuring out which side scores the most is slightly trickier.

There is little doubt that West Ham are hamstrung by the loss of Edson Alvarez to suspension with either James Ward-Prowse dropping back or Kalvin Phillips getting a recall alongside Thomas Soucek, and if Mohamed Kudus isn’t fit that would represent another blow.

However, Jarrod Bowen, Lucas Paqueta and Michail Antonio trio are a major threat on the break and Newcastle are shipping an unhealthy number of goals.

Since beating Fulham 3-0 before Christmas they have played 11 league games, kept a clean sheet in just one (3-0 v Wolves) and let in 27 goals.

In the four home games prior to beating an off-colour Wolves, they lost 3-1 and 3-2 against Nottingham Forest and Manchester City respectively and then drew 4-4 with Luton and 2-2 with Bournemouth.

With the exception of the City game, those results could prove really damaging and they do look frail, moreso minus keeper Nick Pope and now centre-back Sven Botman.

This fixture looks set up for Newcastle to attack and West Ham to bide their time, as is the David Moyes way, and the Draw or West Ham Double Chance at 10/11 is the suggestion.

Bruno Guimaraes to be booked @ 10/3

There were six yellow cards when these clubs met at the London Stadium in the autumn and it was no great surprise that Bruno Guimaraes and Emerson Palmieri were among those getting their names taken.

West Ham left-back Emerson has got seven yellow cards this term and will be under pressure getting attacked at pace, but 7/4 looks short enough for him to be booked.

Odds of 10/3 for Bruno Guimaraes to pick up a caution, however, looks pretty generous given the Brazilian’s rap sheet.

The Newcastle playmaker is walking a tightrope at the moment having been stuck on nine yellows since 13th January. One more yellow in the next four games and he is hit with a two-game ban and the Toon can ill-afford to be without him at the moment.

To prove he’s not lost his touch he was one of nine players cautioned in Brazil’s supposed friendly against Spain in Madrid on Tuesday, and it’s more luck than judgement that he hasn’t transgressed domestically of late.

He knows the price of a 10th booking but in the heat of the moment, and in a huge game like this, he still looks a fair price to get cautioned.

Under 10.5 Corners @ 5/6

The prospect of goals doesn’t always equate to loads of corners, certainly in the case of Newcastle. They average just 4.7 corners per match this season.

West Ham average 4.4 corners per away game and in the earlier 2-2 draw between the sides in London there were just six corners, four for the Hammers.

The Corners 2-Way mark has been set at 10.5 and all the evidence points to that being too high.
