Newcastle’s aspirations of clinching UEFA Champions League football for next season continue with a clash against Crystal Palace at St James’ Park on Wednesday evening.
The Magpies put in a fantastic second-half performance to rout Manchester United 4-1 in the north easy on Sunday, leaving them fourth in the Premier League and knowing that a win in this midweek fixture would take them above Nottingham Forest into third.
Eddie Howe’s side face a Palace team that saw their excellent run of form halted abruptly at the hands of a rampant Manchester City at the weekend, and that low morale could play a part in their trip to Tyneside.
Newcastle United to win - 4/6
Newcastle were brought back down to earth last season as they were forced to settle for seventh in the Premier League, but the Magpies have used the absence of European commitments to great effect in 2024/25 and head into their midweek game in hand odds-on to clinch UEFA Champions League qualification this season.
It is unclear if manager Howe will return to the sidelines after his admission to hospital on Friday, but second-in-charge Jason Tindall oversaw a 4-1 thrashing of Manchester United on Sunday which extended the Magpies’ winning streak to five games in all competitions.
One of these winning games saw them clinch a long-overdue trophy in the EFL Cup final, and they can continue to ride that wave of positivity against Crystal Palace on Wednesday.
The visiting Eagles let a 2-0 lead slip to a 5-2 hammering at Manchester City on Saturday as Pep Guardiola’s men turned on the style in the second half, with Oliver Glasner citing a change in setup as the reason his side collapsed at the Etihad.
Whatever the reason, that defeat will surely play on the minds of the Palace players, and now they head to a ground they lost 4-0 at last season.
Jacob Murphy to score or assist - 1/1
The first of Newcastle’s four goals against Palace last season was scored by Jacob Murphy and he went on to assist two more goals in that game, making the 30-year-old one to watch as the Eagles pay St James' Park another visit.
Those three goal contributions accounted for 30% of Murphy's goal involvements last season, but the versatile winger has proven a much more consistent threat this term.
He assisted one of Harvey Barnes' two second-half goals against Manchester United on Sunday, taking his tally to seven goals and 10 assists in 28 Premier League appearances this season.
Murphy has five goal contributions in his last four competitive games and looks good value to add to his tally against Glasner's side.
Joelinton to be booked - 10/3
Newcastle enforcer Joelinton was lucky to avoid a booking on Sunday as he clashed with Manuel Ugarte while being substituted against Manchester United, but the combative Brazilian is never far from the referee's attention and could pick up a 10th Premier League booking of the season on Wednesday.
Only six players in the division have committed more fouls than Joelinton and he has averaged a card every 199 minutes of Premier League action at St James' Park this season.
The 28-year-old was booked for Brazil in March’s international break to take his tally to seven cards in his 19 appearances for club and country since Christmas.
