A first ever season in the Football League for Bromley has coincided with a maiden third-round appearance in the FA Cup, although their journey looks set for an abrupt end at Newcastle United.
The Ravens’ reward for seeing off non-league outfits Rochdale and Solihull Moors is a nasty one, with a trip to St James’ Park to face an extremely in-form Newcastle unlikely to yield any further progress in the competition.
Bromley boss Andy Woodman was once a goalkeeping coach at Newcastle and while he will be relishing a return, it is not expected to be a fruitful one for his League Two underdogs with a giant-killing extremely unlikely.
Newcastle to win and over 3.5 goals - 5/6
Bromley deserve great respect for their start to life in the Football League as Woodman had his side sitting 12th and a huge 14 points above the drop zone ahead of this weekend, despite many tipping them for an immediate return to the National League.
Their league position means the Ravens can afford to name a strong side for their maiden FA Cup third-round appearance, but even that may not be enough to stop a rampant Newcastle from progressing.
The Magpies are one of the most in-form sides in Europe, with Eddie Howe’s men now on a seven-game winning streak which has seen them score 20 goals.
They only seem to be improving too, beating Aston Villa, Manchester United, Tottenham and Arsenal in their last four matches - the latter of those wins granting them a two-goal lead in the EFL Cup semi-finals.
Newcastle will see the EFL Cup as a real shot at their first major trophy since 1955 but doubling their chances of silverware by progressing in this, more-coveted, competition will also be important to the Toon Army.
Therefore, it is unlikely Howe will make wholesale changes for this clash and his star men such as Anthony Gordon, Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes may all still be involved in some form.
Given the Magpies put four past Ipswich and netted three against a strong Aston Villa last month, it is fair to expect them to notch a few at St James’ Park on Sunday, with over 3.5 goals making further appeal given Bromley have scored at least two in five of their last six away games.
Sean Longstaff to score at any time - 4/1
Newcastle-born Sean Longstaff has been starved of minutes this season due to the return of Sandro Tonali but he should be given a decent run in this clash and the midfielder looks a big price to find the net.
He took two shots - one of which tested the goalkeeper - against Wimbledon in theEFL Cup in the Magpies’ other clash with League Two opposition this term and he proved he has an eye for goal last season.
Longstaff scored six Premier League goals last term, including two in the Magpies’ final four games of the campaign, and the Tyneside native will be keen to impress as he bids to remain a player at his boyhood club.
The Newcastle midfielder also took two shots on his last Premier League start, so he is clearly not afraid to have a crack, either from range or via a late run into the box, and 4/1 looks a huge price for him to score against a Bromley side that shipped four goals in their last match.
Michael Cheek to score at any time - 9/2
While a heavy defeat for Bromley seems likely, as mentioned in our first tip, they are not without a chance of grabbing a memorable goal on Tyneside and giving those few fans brave enough to make the long trip from Greater London to Newcastle something to celebrate.
The Ravens have netted an impressive 19 goals in their last 10 games and while a few players have chipped in during that run, if any player is to provide their magical FA Cup moment on Tyneside it is likely to be Michael Cheek.
The former Braintree forward has bagged 13 League Two goals this term, scored in the first-round victory over Rochdale and has netted three times in his last five Bromley appearances.
9/2 is a generous price for a natural finisher like Cheek to take any rare chances which come his way and it could be worth backing at small stakes.
