Brighton head to St James’ Park having made a fine start to the season, but hosts Newcastle United will still be confident of seeing off the Seagulls.
The Magpies went into the international break winless in three Premier League outings and their 0-0 draw at Everton was a disappointment, but Eddie Howe’s side are struggling to dominate matches partly due to a raft of injuries.
Saturday’s clash with Albion is unlikely to be straightforward game for the hosts, as the visitors have earned plenty of plaudits this term and have already won at Manchester United and drawn at Arsenal.
Newcastle to win - 19/20
Newcastle dominated proceedings against Everton to no avail, missing a penalty in a 0-0 draw. However, the Magpies have been notably better in games where their opponents take the initiative.
That’s been clear in clashes with Man City and Tottenham and opponents Brighton will likely push forward at St James’ Park.
The hosts are unbeaten in 12 games on their own turf, winning three of four matches this season.
Meanwhile, Brighton’s last away trip brought a 4-2 loss at Chelsea and they found themselves 2-0 down to Tottenham before a spirited fightback ahead of the international break.
For all the good work Fabian Hurzeler has done, his aggressive high-line has brought issues. That could also count against the Seagulls here, while it suits a Newcastle side who have been missing Alexander Isak of late.
Eddie Howe has moved Anthony Gordon into a central role and a front three of Gordon, Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy should be able to get behind Brighton’s defence and cause problems, so back the hosts to secure the points.
Anthony Gordon to score anytime - 2/1
Gordon leads the way for Newcastle in terms of Expected Goals this term, which isn’t a surprise given he has been deployed in a central role in certain matches.
The England international will likely be their biggest threat once again this weekend, but playing at St James’ Park should see him return to scoring form.
The winger netted 11 times in the league last season and nine of those came in 18 matches at home.
With Gordon averaging a goal every other game at home, his price of 2/1 to score at anytime holds a lot of appeal. The Seagulls have conceded eight goals across their last three outings and they should be vulnerable again.
Take the former Everton man to bounce back from his penalty miss and continue a fine record on Tyneside.
Joelinton and Joel Veltman to be booked - 17/2
While Saturday’s clash is expected to feature plenty of goals, expect a few cards on Tyneside too.
Newcastle midfielder Joelinton is always a good bet to have his name taken, having already been shown four yellow cards in seven appearances this season.
The Brazilian has averaged 2.4 fouls per game in the Premier League and his all-action style routinely sees him end up in the book.
With Brighton set to move the ball with pace, it’s easy to see the play bypassing Joelinton and forcing him to chase down the visitors’ forward players. Given that, Joelinton to be booked stands out here.
As for the Seagulls, right-back Joel Veltman leads the way in fouls per game and he’s a good bet for a caution. He has been booked 10 times across the previous two league campaigns and he ended up in the book in a clash with Ipswich already this term.
With Barnes taking him on down that flank, taking on Veltman and Joelinton to be carded for a 17/2 double looks shrewd.
