Newcastle United v Brentford: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Eleven days after Brentford beat Newcastle 4-2 in the Premier League at the Gtech Community Stadium, Eddie Howe's men get their chance of revenge in the EFL Cup quarter-finals.

Newcastle warmed up for the task with a 4-0 thumping of Leicester City on Saturday and will hope to exploit the fact that Brentford boast the joint worst away record in the Premier League.

Over 2.5 Goals & BTTS - 10/11

Brentford's hopes of making a second-ever EFL Cup semi-final have been dealt a blow by the fixture scheduling though it's their away form rather than the calendar which explains why they are 17/4 chances in 90 minutes and 7/4 to qualify.

Thomas Frank's men, a bright, bubbly winning machine in front of their own fans, have so far mustered a paltry one point out of a possible 24 on the road in the Premier League.

The only times they have avoided defeat on their travels this season was when they won 1-0 at Colchester in the second round of this competition and drew 0-0 at Everton in November.

In their defence, six of their seven away losses have come at sides currently in the top 10 and the losses at Manchester City and Manchester United, Fulham and on Sunday at Chelsea, have all been by the odd goal.

Newcastle have to take positives from that record, though, and the other thing that seems to be in the Magpies' favour is the timing of the game. While the Toon have had four days to recover from their Saturday afternoon thumping of Leicester, the Bees have had less than three after losing 2-1 at Chelsea on Sunday night.

There is nothing between the teams if the league table is your guide - they are a place apart, both on 23 points and both with goal differences of plus two.

But Newcastle have won 14 points at home, Brentford just one away and that's a colossal gulf.

But, Brentford know they can beat the Toon having done so on 7th December, a thrilling 4-2 win in West London in the league.

That was the second successive 4-2 scoreline in this fixture - Newcastle won the previous meeting by that score in May, also at Brentford - and hints that goals are likely on Tyneside this time.

All but three of Brentford's 16 league games so far have yielded three goals or more and in nine of their last 10 both teams have scored in matches featuring over 2.5 goals.

Newcastle's clean sheet against Leicester was their first in six games and both teams have scored in 10 of their 16 league matches.

Alexander Isak to have over 1.5 shots on target - 1/1

Alexander Isak, one of the top-flight's most in-form marksmen, found the net in the 4-2 loss at Brentford the weekend before last, just as he did in the 4-2 win at the same venue in May.

Isak's goal at Brentford 11 days ago was his seventh domestic goal of the season with number eight arriving in the 4-0 drubbing of Leicester on Saturday.

Added to the 21 top-flight goals he bagged last season, the Swede is one of the hottest goalscorers around.

He didn't need to play the full 90 minutes against Leicester - Eddie Howe was able to bring him off after 73 minutes with the game won - so he should be pretty fresh to run hard at Brentford's back line.

Isak averages 2.9 shots per game in the Premier League with exactly one shot on target per match.

With Newcastle sure to be positive from the off, back the Swede to have over 1.5 shots on target.

Over 3.5 Brentford corners - 10/11

It is easy to see why Newcastle are in for 6.5 corners in 2-way betting given that Brentford concede a league-high 9.75 away corners in the league this season.

They conceded eight at Chelsea on Sunday though they also won five of their own and set-pieces are a big part of the Bees' armoury.

Newcastle concede 6.4 corners in home league games so don't be surprised to see Brentford clear 3.5 corners.
