Newcastle v Sheffield United: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Newcastle have claimed 11 of their 15 Premier League victories at St James' Park this season and they are hot favourites to pick up another three points at home to Championship-bound Sheffield United.

Newcastle v Sheffield United betting tips and predictions

Newcastle to win & both teams to score - 13/10

Bottom club Sheffield United are on the brink of relegation from the Premier League after a chastening season in which they have conceded 92 goals in 34 games.

The Blades' worst defeat of the campaign was September’s 8-0 mauling by Newcastle at Bramall Lane and the Magpies are expected to outclass them again this weekend.

That rout was one of only four away wins for Newcastle, who were disappointing in their midweek 2-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.

But Eddie Howe's men are far more formidable on their own patch and they dismantled top-four contenders Tottenham 4-0 in their last home fixture.

Newcastle's defence is not entirely trustworthy, though. They conceded a late equaliser against Everton at St James' Park on 2nd April and had to come from 3-1 down to beat West Ham 4-3 in a thrilling encounter last month.

Backing the hosts to win and both teams to score on Saturday looks a decent approach given Sheffield United's renewed attacking vigour.

The Blades gave Manchester United a scare at Old Trafford on Wednesday, leading the FA Cup finalists 1-0 and 2-1 before slipping to a 4-2 defeat.

Both teams have scored in six of their last seven league matches, including a 3-1 loss against Liverpool at Anfield and a 2-2 draw at home to Chelsea, and January signing Ben Brereton Diaz has proved a smart addition, scoring five goals in 10 starts.

Alexander Isak to score two or more goals - 3/1

While the Blades have improved in attack, they are still conceding goals at an alarming rate and Newcastle striker Alexander Isak could fill his boots against the leaky visitors.

Isak missed a decent early chance against Palace but he has barely put a foot wrong since Christmas, particularly at St James' Park.

The stylish Sweden forward scored with two of his six shots against Tottenham in Newcastle's last home game, taking his tally to 12 goals in 12 home appearances in this season's Premier League.

Isak's haul includes braces against Aston Villa, West Ham and Spurs so he looks capable of scoring at least twice against the worst defence in the division.

Under 3.5 cards in match - 5/6

The match betting suggests a one-sided contest at St James' Park and it could be a quiet game in terms of bookings.

Since Mason Holgate's 13th-minute red card against Brighton in February, Sheffield United have picked up only 20 yellow cards in just under 10 full matches.

Their 6-0 home defeat to Arsenal and 3-1 loss at Liverpool both produced only one booking in the match, as did their last two games against Burnley and Manchester United.

Newcastle have not received a caution in either of their last two home matches against Everton and Tottenham and the Magpies also stayed out of trouble in their 8-0 victory at Bramall Lane earlier this season.

The Blades' relegation is all but guaranteed, taking some of the sting out of this fixture, so under 3.5 cards looks a good bet at St James' Park.
