Motherwell v Rangers: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Rangers suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat at St Mirren on Boxing Day to bring an end to some momentum that had been building in their hopes of closing the gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

The Light Blues are now 12 points behind rivals Celtic and with a meeting between the two in just a few days time, they will be desperate to get the victory on the road against Motherwell beforehand.

The Steelmen have been in solid form, taking seven points from their last three games before losing 4-0 to Celtic last time out.

Motherwell v Rangers betting tips and predictions

Both teams to score - 19/20

Rangers’ 2-1 defeat to St Mirren last time out was their fourth league defeat of the campaign and has all but ended any hopes that they had of getting back in the title race with Celtic, the gap growing to 12 points with a meeting between the two in the New Year looming.

The Gers suffered penalty shootout heartache to their Glasgow rivals in the Scottish League Cup final earlier this month and are just a point ahead of Aberdeen, despite the Dons losing three of their last four games as part of a seven-game winless run.

A season of transition was always likely with many of their old guard being phased out but Philippe Clement would like to have seen more to suggest that his team can compete against the Bhoys sooner rather than later.

They face another tough task as they visit Motherwell, who are aiming for a top-six finish after a solid enough start to the campaign.

Before their 4-0 defeat to Celtic last time out, the Steelmen arguably should have had three wins on the bounce after they suffered a subsequently overturned red card in their 1-1 draw against Kilmarnock.

In Lennon Miller the hosts have the most coveted young player in Scotland and he will be a big factor in any success they may have in this game, with the 18-year-old already contributing five league assists this term.

Both teams have found the net in four of the Well’s last five home games and the same is fancied when a struggling Rangers side visit.

The last three meetings between these two teams have finished 2-1, twice to Rangers and once to Motherwell, so this should be another ultra-competitive affair and both teams can play their part.

Vaclav Cerny to score at any time - 2/1

Not many of Rangers’ recent signings have covered themselves in glory this season but Vaclav Cerny has been a definite bright spark.

Only Dundee United’s Sam Dalby has scored more league goals in the Scottish top flight than Cerny’s seven while he has also chipped in with three in the UEFA Europa League.

The Czech forward hit the woodwork against St Mirren last time out and leads the Gers in both shots and shots on target.

Take Cerny to add to his strong start to the season and find the net once again when he faces a Well defence that leaked four last time out.

Jefte to be booked - 9/4

Jefte is one of the youngest players in this Rangers side and sometimes that can show in his lack of discipline.

The Brazilian left-back has already been booked four times in the league this season and has also been cautioned in the UEFA Europa League.

Side with the defender to end up in the referee’s notebook once again on this away trip.
