Motherwell v Celtic: Tips, Predictions and Odds

Celtic will look to return to winning ways and keep up with league leaders and bitter rivals Rangers when they travel to North Lanarkshire to face Motherwell on Sunday.

Draws to Aberdeen and, most recently, Kilmarnock in 2024 has handed the initiative over to the blue side of Glasgow, but Brendan Rodgers should feel confident that his side can get back to winning ways on the weekend.

Motherwell have picked up just one win over their last six games in all competitions, including a defeat to Scottish Championship side Morton in the cup, and last picked up all three points against the Bhoys back in 2015.

Motherwell vs Celtic betting tips and predictions

Celtic to win and Both Teams to Score @ 7/4

Despite losing their first place position in the table and dropping two points last time out, Celtic remain very much a force to be reckoned with, and they have been typically difficult to defeat in the league this season.

Their only two defeats came back-to-back in December to Kilmarnock and Hearts, with the Bhoys winning seven of their following eight league games.

No side has scored more goals in the Scottish Premiership than Celtic’s 58, while Motherwell have the division’s third leakiest defence - conceding 41 - and so this looks to be a recipe for a comfortable victory for the Glaswegian outfit.

However, with only two clean sheets kept across their last five league games, there could be some joy for Stuart Kettlewell’s men who surprisingly boast the third best attack in the league (35 goals scored) despite lying in ninth.

The Well have found the net in each of their last five meetings with Scotland’s biggest side and should be more than capable of getting on the scoresheet again on Sunday, albeit in defeat.

Goal after 78:59 @ 5/6

Meetings between these two sides, particularly this season, have had a penchant for providing late drama, with seven of the last 13 goals being scored past the 80th minute mark.

The first fixture between the two, at Tynecastle in September, saw each strike in Celtic’s 2-1 victory come past the 87th minute, with Blair Spittal’s 95th minute equaliser looking to give the Well a vital point only for Matt O’Riley to grab a winner two minutes later.

The Steelmen then produced their own late moment of magic at Celtic Park in November, with Jonathan Obika levelling at the end of regulation time after David Turbull looked to have netted an 86th minute winner from the spot.

Late drama looks to be a theme when these sides come to blows and, with injury time strikes coming against both Motherwell and Celtic in their last league games, expect further drama to unfold in the dying stages.

Stephen O’Donnell to be booked @ 11/4

The cards market could be a lucrative option for this fixture, given the tendency for ill-discipline for either side when they have come to blows this season.

Nine yellow cards have been brandished by the officials across the previous two meetings in the league, with the Steelmen picking up the majority of these with seven.

Motherwell’s Callum Slattery and Stephen O’Donnell received bookings in each of these encounters and, with the former expected to miss out through a knee injury, the latter looks to be a worthy punt at 11/4.

Kettlewell’s men have already received 71 cards in the league this campaign - three of these being reds - and should be in the thick of the action once more on Sunday, with O’Donnell more than happy to get stuck in for his side.
