Millwall v Dagenham & Redbridge: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Millwall will look to advance in the FA Cup when they host National League side Dagenham & Redbridge at The Den on Monday evening in the third round.

The Lions sit mid-table in the Championship and have struggled for form recently, winning just once in their last 11 league matches. They'll be hoping the cup provides a welcome distraction under new manager Alex Neil, who replaced Neil Harris late last month.

Dagenham & Redbridge parted company with former boss Ben Strevens following a 4-2 defeat at home to Braintree Town on December 26.

That result left them just five points clear of the National League relegation places, but they have subsequently eased their plight with a victory over bottom club Ebbsfleet United and a 1-1 draw with second-placed Forest Green Rovers in midweek.

The Daggers have beaten two Football League sides to reach the third round. They followed up their victory over League Two promotion-chasers Crewe Alexandra in round one with a 2-1 win at AFC Wimbledon, which was the upset of the second round until Tamworth knocked Burton Albion out on penalties.

Millwall, meanwhile, will look to improve a dire cup record in recent seasons with the Lions having exited at the third-round stage in each of the last three editions.

This will be only the second FA Cup meeting between these sides, after Millwall triumphed 5-0 in a third-round replay in 2011/12 after the initial tie ended goalless.

Millwall vs Dagenham & Redbridge betting tips and predictions

Millwall to win and under 2.5 goals - 3/1

While Millwall are the clear 1/3 favourites to finish the tie inside 90 minutes, they are not known for their goalscoring prowess this season.

The Bermondsey outfit are the Championship’s least potent side, tied with Stoke City and Plymouth Argyle, with only 24 goals to show from their 35 league games.

New manager Neil is not renowned for an overly attacking style either with his Stoke teams producing just 68 goals in his 60 league games in charge.

And yet because they are facing non-league opposition, there is an expectation that this clash will feature three or more goals.

But four of the Daggers’ last six games have not seen a third goal scored and they were able to keep out a good Crewe Alex side for 90 minutes when they nicked a 1-0 win at Gresty Road in November.

Meanwhile, 16 of the Lions’ last 18 games have seen fewer than three goals scored.

Millwall have a great cup record against non-league clubs, having progressed from their last 10 ties against opponents from outside the Football League.

So it is probably worth siding with the hosts in this fixture while factoring in the recent upturn in Dagenham & Redbridge’s defensive performance to formulate a bet on Millwall to win with fewer than three goals in the game.

Under 0.5 First Half Goals - 5/2

Millwall have struggled to assert themselves early in games recently, scoring only twice before half-time in their last nine home games.

The same can be said of the Daggers, who have scored only two first-half goals in their last seven National League games.

The National League side kept a clean sheet at Ebbsfleet last weekend and were on course for another at the New Lawn on Wednesday thanks to goalkeeper Elliot Justham’s heroics.

But Forest Green managed to break through their resistance and claim a point with a 95th-minute equaliser.

Millwall have conceded only two goals before the break in their last nine at The Den too, so a goalless first half would not be a surprise on Monday.

Macaulay Langstaff First Goalscorer - 15/4

Millwall’s lack of goals this season can, in part, be put down to the injuries suffered by Tom Bradshaw and Josh Coburn.

The Lions’ likely strike duo for this game will be Macauley Langstaff and Mihailo Ivanovic.

Ivanovic is a raw 20-year-old prospect from Serbia who has scored two goals in 16 appearances, albeit only five of those were starts.

Langstaff was signed from League Two Notts County last summer and he has struggled to adapt to the higher level.

But the 27-year-old was a prolific goalscorer in non-league football, where he registered 42 National League goals for County a year after hitting 28 for Gateshead.

Langstaff scored a hat-trick against Dagenham & Redbridge when he faced them in the 2022/23 campaign and he looks like a good option at attractive odds to open the scoring on Monday.
