Millwall v Burnley: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Burnley have made a strong start in their bid to secure an immediate return to the Premier League following their relegation last term.

However, while they are still within touching distance of Championship leaders Sunderland, they have struggled to find the winning formula lately.

That is bad news ahead of a trip to The Den given that Millwall love to frustrate the division’s top sides, so the Clarets may well be the latest team to endure a tricky afternoon in south London.

Draw @ 11/5

The Clarets have drawn four of their last six matches, being held by bottom-half sides Oxford United, Preston North End, Hull City and QPR during that run.

Those poor results will have Clarets fans worrying then as a trip to The Den is never easy and the fact Millwall are unbeaten in four matches suggests it could be a frustrating afternoon for Scott Parker’s side.

The English manager has struggled to replicate the dominance Vincent Kompany achieved at the helm the last time the Clarets were in the Championship and the former Fulham boss needs to rediscover the winning touch soon.

However, that is unlikely to come at Millwall, who held Kompany’s Burnley to a 1-1 draw the last time the pair met.

With Parker’s Clarets outfit a weaker team this time around and Neil Harris getting a real tune out of his Lions, another draw may be on the cards.

Burnley’s recent struggles could be put down to poor finishing, with the Clarets netting just four goals in their last six matches, but that is not something which can be fixed overnight.

The Londoners have gone 11 games without conceding more than one goal in a match, suggesting that they can frustrate their promotion-chasing visitors and earn a well-deserved point in the capital.

Over 4.5 cards @ 4/6

Should Millwall find themselves in the lead on Sunday, Harris will no doubt instruct his side to slow play down and draw maximum frustration out of Parker and his players, making cards a likely route to profit at the Den.

Ahead of this weekend’s round of fixtures, only Preston and Norwich had received more yellow cards in the Championship than Millwall’s 31, highlighting how Harris’ direct and sometimes old-fashioned approach can lead to robust challenges and intervention from the match officials.

Burnley also rank in the top 10 for yellows, having received 26 this term, suggesting that they could help bring up the tally too.

If the Clarets fall behind for a prolonged period they will be sure to show their frustration.

Their trio of midfield Joshs, namely Cullen, Brownhill and Laurent, are all known for wearing their hearts on their sleeves and it would be no surprise to see any of them pick up a card in the capital if things aren’t going the visitors’ way.

Three of Millwall’s last four matches have featured at least five cards and the same is true for three of Burnley’s six Championship away games this season.

Over 4.5 cards seems a fairly safe bet for Sunday’s clash.

Bashir Humphreys to be carded @ 4/1

Before this weekend’s Championship fixtures, no side had a lower average possession per game than Millwall’s 39.6 per cent, while Burnley had the third-highest figure in the same statistic with 57.8 per cent.

That suggests the pattern of play at The Den will likely be Burnley-centric, but that front-foot approach from the Clarets could play into Millwall’s hands as Harris will look to hit the visitors on the counter.

Their out ball in such situations will likely be Romain Esse, who is rapidly becoming one of the Lions' most important players despite being only 19 years old.

The youngster has scored three goals and provided one assist in 12 league games this season, but it is the other work he does which has garnered him plenty of praise.

Esse is an excellent ball-carrier and no Championship player has been fouled more than the Millwall man this term, with the winger being brought down on 31 occasions, which makes Burnley’s left-back worthy of an investment in the booking market.

Bashir Humphreys already has three yellow cards in the Championship this term, despite playing just seven games and the Chelsea loanee may be in for a tough afternoon against one of the trickiest wingers in the division.
