Mexico v Jamaica: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Mexico and Jamaica begin their Copa America campaigns in the early hours of Sunday morning at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.

These sides find themselves in what looks a competitive Group B alongside Ecuador and Venezuela, and Mexico will feel they can kick off the tournament with a win as they have enjoyed some success against Jamaica in recent years.

Mexico v Jamaica betting tips and predictions

Mexico -1 handicap - 13/10

Mexico and Jamaica are familiar foes as they have met five times since September of 2021 and El Tri have dominated as they are unbeaten during that period, winning three of those games.

The Central American nation won 3-0 when these sides last met in July of last year in a Gold Cup match and that clash occurred on US soil, so Mexico should come into this tie feeling they have an edge over the Reggae Boyz.

Jamaica do come into the game in reasonable form as they are unbeaten in normal time across their last seven games but they haven’t really tested themselves against high quality opposition in the build-up to the Copa America.

The Caribbean outfit are on a three-game winning streak but those victories have come against Panama and Dominica, twice, and all three of those wins were by one-goal margins.

In contrast, Mexico look out-of-sorts with three defeats in their last four but they have been taking on elite sides. Jaime Lozano’s men completed their own warm-up bid with a tough challenge against South American heavyweights Brazil and competed well in a 3-2 defeat on neutral territory, which suggests they are a level above Jamaica.

Mexico dominated for large periods when these sides met in the summer of 2023 and won convincingly. It could be a similar scenario again in this latest clash between these two teams and they can get their bid for silverware up and running by covering a -1 handicap in their opening fixture.

Julian Quinones to score anytime - 2/1

Julian Quinones appeals as a scorer pick for Mexico after an impressive season at club level.

Quinones enjoyed a strong campaign with Club America as he managed 18 goals and seven assists in 41 games, and he could be one of his adopted country’s key forwards in the United States over the course of the next few weeks.

The Colombia-born attacker has two goals in five games since completing his naturalisation process and becoming a Mexican citizen, including an effort in the defeat to Brazil.

Quinones, who agreed a deal to join Saudi Arabia’s Al Qadsiah in June, has two goals in his last four appearances for his former club and his country and he looks a clear candidate to get among the goals when Mexico take on Jamaica.

Shamar Nicholson over 0.5 shots on target - 6/4

Ultimately a fairly comfortable Mexico win is expected, but that doesn’t mean Jamaica won’t provide a test at times and backing Shamar Nicholson to at least test the keeper looks excellent value here.

Nicholson endured a frustrating season at club level with Clermont as they were relegated from France’s Ligue 1 but he has the chance to put himself in the shop window, so to speak, in the USA with Jamaica.

The 27-year-old averaged 1.5 shots per game in the French top flight last season, despite occasionally finding himself playing a bit-part role for Clermont, and he tended to be fairly accurate - with over half of his attempts recorded as on target (0.8 per game).

Nicholson has been in great form in the build-up to the Copa America with three goals in his last two games for Jamaica. That should see him start ahead of Demarai Gray against Mexico and he should at least be able to test the Mexico keeper.
