Marseille v Paris Saint-Germain: Prediction, Tips and Odds

The game billed as 'Le Classique' will bring down the curtain on the Easter Weekend action in Ligue 1 and Paris Saint-Germain should fancy their chances against injury-hit Marseille.

Luis Enrique's side began the latest round of games in the French top flight armed with a 12-point lead at the top and, seemingly, with a third Ligue 1 title on the trot now within touching distance.

Marseille have their own battles to fight, entering this weekend in seventh, two places and four points shy of the European spots. However, a woeful record on their travels will surely scupper any continental ambitions for Jean-Louis Gasset and his new side.

Paris Saint-Germain to win - 21/20

Something may have to give way on Sunday evening when Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain do battle on the south coast of France.

Marseille started the weekend as proud owners of Ligue 1’s best home record, with eight wins and five draws from 13 games – they are unbeaten at the Stade Velodrome..

PSG, for their part, are the best travellers having tallied nine wins, four draws and no defeats from 13 on the road.

Perhaps they'll play out a draw in the Velodrome and both remain unscathed, that outcome is tempting at 14/5, but preference is for a winning performance from Kylian Mbappe and company instead, as their inexorable march to the title navigates another stopping point.

Before the international break, Marseille were beaten in the Europa League 3-1 by Villarreal – albeit they progressed, regardless – and then 2-0 at Rennes in the league.

Granted, they are on a four-game winning streak at home, and had scored 15 goals in four Ligue 1 games prior to that Rennes setback, but this will be their toughest test of the season on their own patch.

Gasset took over the reins at Marseille from Gennaro Gattuso and his tenure began with five straight wins, but maybe the new manager bounce is now wearing off.

Enrique's table-toppers head to Marseille with a 24-game unbeaten run behind them. While news of Mbappe's decision to leave was initially met with a frosty response, it appears the PSG powers that be have decided to allow the talented forward to enjoy his final couple of months at the club.

Mbappe's response was to fire off a hat-trick in a 6-2 demolition at Montpellier last time out. With their talisman in fine tune, Paris Saint-Germain can silence the fiery Velodrome and take maximum points home.

Over 3.5 Total Goals - 6/4

This could be an entertaining encounter. With their massive advantage at the top, a defeat wouldn't damage PSG significantly, while Marseille's need is essentially greater as they pursue that European qualification spot.

Paris Saint-Germain have scored four and three times in their last two meetings with Marseille. They have also found the net 29 times in 13 games away from home this season in Ligue 1.

Marseille's scoring record isn't as impressive, with just 24 in 13 home assignments. Under their new boss, however, Les Olympiens have become a more cavalier side.

That initial five-game winning run saw them scoring 18 times and they'll surely need the scoring boots on if they are going to hang with Mbappe and company.

There will be a fervent atmosphere for this Sunday evening dust-up and it could be quite entertaining.

PSG to score in both halves - 13/8

With Marseille potentially missing a raft of defensive options in Jonathan Clauss, Ulisses Garcia, Samuel Gigot, Bamo Meite, Leonardo Balerdi and Amir Murillo this could be a really difficult night for them.

The home side also know they need to try and get something from this game, with Lens, Nice and Lille enjoying some daylight above them.

PSG, with Mbappe in hot form, scored twice in the first half at Montpellier last time and hit four more after the break. Their ace marksman also scored one in each half at Real Sociedad in the Champions League at the start of the month.

Mbappe is 5/1 to score two more here, but a safer option is taking his team to trouble the scorekeeper either side of half-time.
