Manchester United Women v Liverpool Women: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Liverpool beat Manchester United in both of their Women’s Super League meetings last season and we look to be in for a keenly contested clash when the pair meet at the Leigh Sports Village on Sunday.

Liverpool finished six points ahead of Manchester United in the Women’s Super League last season and they should be confident they can get something from their trip to the Leigh Sports Village after winning both of their league games against the Red Devils last term.

However, United will be looking to get back to winning ways after suffering their first defeat of the season to champions Chelsea in their last game.

Manchester United Women v Liverpool Women betting tips and predictions

Both teams to score - 5/6

Liverpool will have been delighted to have pipped Manchester United to fourth spot in last season’s Women’s Super League, although they have not quite lived up to those heightened expectations since.

They need to pick themselves up after a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea and a 1-0 loss to Merseyside rivals Everton, when a Katja Snoeijs penalty proved decisive.

However, despite those recent results, there have been some encouraging signs and they gave highly fancied Manchester City a big scare at Anfield before they fell to an injury-time goal from the Citizens’ hotshot Khadija Shaw in a 2-1 defeat.

And their defeat to Everton was only the second occasion in their last 17 WSL away matches when the Reds have failed to score.

Five of United’s last six games have featured fewer than three goals, but this looks an episode when both teams could find the net, especially as Liverpool knocked in six the last time they were in action against Championship Newcastle in the League Cup.

United know the path to goal, having scored at least twice in seven of their last 10 home league games, so it would not be a surprise if we were treated to an entertaining encounter.

Elisabeth Terland to score - 8/5

United look set to welcome back Elisabeth Terland to their line-up after she missed their last two games through injury, but the extra week off from international duty should have been a benefit and she could hit the ground running on her return to Marc Skinner’s team.

The Norwegian has proved a strong addition since she scored 13 goals for Brighton last season, and while she may be a little disappointed to have scored just three goals this season, it has not been because she has been shy to try her luck.

Terland, who was on target in her last appearance in the 3-0 home victory over Leicester, has started seven matches and had a total of 22 attempts on goal.

She should be hungry to make a strong impression upon her return from the treatment room and it would not be a surprise if she added to her tally.

Olivia Smith over 2.5 shots - 5/6

Another player who has flourished in the Women’s Super League after a summer move is Liverpool forward Olivia Smith, who has done well since arriving in English football from Canada.

The 20-year-old has been a regular for Matt Beard’s team and has looked to test the goalkeeper at every opportunity, scoring twice, including in the narrow defeat to Manchester City when her goal gave the Reds an Anfield lead.

Smith has had 22 attempts in eight starts and as she has generated at least three in four of those matches, she could have more than 2.5 shots on Sunday.
