Manchester United v Rangers: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Rangers visit Old Trafford on Thursday night for a crucial UEFA Europa League clash against a Manchester United still struggling for form under head coach Ruben Amorim.

The Red Devils have been stung by criticism since Sunday’s 3-1 Premier League home defeat to Brighton with their own head coach even labelling the team "maybe the worst" in the history of the club.

Ruben Amorim will be hoping for a reaction from his side, who remain on course to finish in the top eight of the league phase and avoid a two-legged knockout phase play-off next month.

United have won three UEFA Europa League matches in a row to edge one point ahead of Gers, who have alternated wins with draws across their last four outings in this competition.

Although, like United, Rangers are well off the pace in their domestic league, Philippe Clement’s side have been solid in Europe.

A hard-fought 1-1 draw against Tottenham at Ibrox last time out kept their qualification hopes alive and they will hope to build on that momentum.

Meanwhile, a heavily rotated side cruised past Fraserburgh in the Scottish Cup over the weekend, giving Clement’s key players some rest ahead of this highly anticipated 'Battle of Britain'.

Manchester United v Rangers betting tips and predictions

Manchester United to win and both teams to score - 15/8

Amorim’s harsh post-match words were designed to make headlines and now we will find out if they have had a positive or negative effect on the United dressing room.

Only a much-improved performance will satisfy the home supporters, but even a slight upturn might be enough to claim all three points from an equally inconsistent Rangers side.

Brighton were too good for United in central midfield and out wide, where their two wingers were a major threat in behind and constantly chased back to help out their full-backs.

The Gers do not have the same quality in midfield or energy in the wide areas to be as much of a worry.

The Light Blues have had over 45% possession in only two of their six UEFA Europa League games and have scored more goals than their expected goals tally warranted in four of them.

United have had some wobbly moments in this competition this season, conceding three goals in 23 minutes against Porto and going a goal down away to Viktoria Plzen in the second half.

But they fought back each time and it does appear that, while Amorim’s squad lack the ability to match the intensity of their domestic rivals, they can last the pace against opponents from the continent.

Rangers were not exactly hanging on against Spurs, but their inability to beat an injury-ravaged Premier League opponent at home suggests they are unlikely to win this one.

However, they have the capacity to score, which they have done in all three of their Europa League away games this term, against a Red Devils side that is still prone to making costly blunders.

Rasmus Hojlund to score anytime - 5/4

Rasmus Hojlund has been unable to deliver enough goals in the Premier League this season, finding the back of the net only twice in 12 starts and five appearances off the bench.

The Danish striker was dropped for Sunday’s game and, even with United needing a goal in the second half, was brought on with only a handful of minutes left on the clock.

That should mean he is relatively fresh for this crunch encounter and his record in Europe suggests he is the right choice to lead the line on Thursday.

The former Atalanta frontman has scored five goals in three Europa League starts and three substitute appearances.

That potency is in stark contrast to his domestic form but does mirror his achievements in Europe last season, when he bagged five UEFA Champions League goals in United’s ill-fated group stage campaign.

Man Utd -3 Corner Handicap - 1/1

Rangers have not been a heavy corners team in the UEFA Europa League, earning only 22 in their opening six matches, but they did win seven against Spurs at Ibrox and could view set-pieces as an area where they can get the better of United.

The Red Devils’ defence has been caught out by good deliveries recently with both first-choice keeper Andre Onana and back-up Altay Bayandir left floundering as goals have been scored direct from a corner flag.

But targeting corners and getting them are two different things and Amorim’s side have been able to limit their opponents’ opportunities in Europe recently.

Their last three opponents in this competition have managed to win a combined total of four corners and, with United averaging almost six per game, the home side should cover the -3 corner handicap.
