Manchester United somehow managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in midweek as a 3-2 lead turned into a 4-3 loss at Chelsea.

Manager Erik ten Hag will be desperate for a response but they face a daunting task as fierce rivals Liverpool visit Old Trafford this weekend.

The Merseyside outfit are unbeaten in normal time in their last 12 games across all competitions and know a victory will see them retain top spot in the table after this round of fixtures.

United did manage to overcome Liverpool at this venue in the FA Cup after extra time last month but they have a poor recent record in the league against the visitors, winning just one of the last 11 meetings.

Liverpool to win and over 3.5 goals - 7/4

United may have prevailed when these sides met in the FA Cup just a few weeks ago but they had to do it the hard way, coming back from 2-1 down to win after extra time.

The visitors have rattled off back-to-back league wins after that cup disappointment, while United look to have taken a step back with just one point to show from games against relegation-threatened Brentford and mid-table Chelsea.

The home side look a team low on confidence and their top-four hopes are close to being extinguished, as they trail Aston Villa in fourth spot by 11 points and they’re nine behind Tottenham immediately above them. 

In contrast, Liverpool are a team who are flying with 19 points to show from the last 21 available and their record of four wins in the last six league meetings between these two sides suggests they can get the job done at Old Trafford.

A straightforward Liverpool win pays out at 3/5 so for extra value an away win with over 3.5 total goals should be considered here. 

United have seen at least four goals scored in three of their last five games and they have scored themselves in 16 consecutive fixtures across all competitions, so they should be able to add to the goals tally even if they are unable to claim any points.

However, with both teams expected to score the value is with the home players in this particular market and Alejandro Garnacho is an interesting option at 10/3 for an anytime goal.

The 19-year-old was United’s star man against Chelsea by some distance with two goals, and he has been getting plenty of chances of late, averaging 3.25 shots per-game across his last eight Premier League outings (up from 2.4 for the season), so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him grab a goal on Sunday.

Virgil van Dijk over 0.5 shots on target - 7/4

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk averages a solid 1.1 shots-per-game in the Premier League and just over half of those are either on target or blocked.

The Dutchman will come forward for any set pieces at Old Trafford, so he looks a good outside candidate to at least test the keeper as United have a fairly poor record from set pieces.

The hosts have conceded 25% of their goals in the league from dead ball situations, while 11 of Liverpool’s 70 Premier League goals have come from either corners or free kicks (16%).
