Nottingham Forest v Southampton: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Southampton showed signs of improvement but ultimately fell to a 3-1 defeat against Manchester United on Thursday, and UEFA Champions League-chasing Nottingham Forest could provide further punishment.

The Saints looked on course for an unlikely victory after going ahead after 43 minutes but Amad Diallo equalised and eventually grabbed a hat-trick to help the Red Devils secure a 3-1 victory.

After last Sunday's 3-0 FA Cup victory over Swansea, the performance will have provided further encouragement for Ivan Juric but his new team are still to win on the road and face a Forest side enjoying a fine season.

Tuesday's 1-1 draw against Liverpool may have hindered their faint hopes of winning the title and ended a seven-match winning streak, but it was another case of Nuno Espirito Santo setting his team up to frustrate their opponents.

With an extra 48 hours to prepare, the hosts should have no issues against bottom club Saints.

Nottingham Forest v Southampton betting tips and predictions

Nottingham Forest to win to nil - 6/5

Tuesday's draw against Liverpool ended Forest’s winning run but was still a fine result and maintained their hopes of a top-four finish.

Nuno's men have lost only once at the City Ground since September and are just 19/50 to record a sixth home league win of the campaign.

They are worth backing to do just that and with a clean sheet against Southampton, who are yet to win away in 2024/25, scoring a joint-lowest six goals in the process.

Meanwhile, Forest have conceded just eight times at home and also have history on their side.

Sunday's hosts have lost just one of the last 12 Premier League meetings between these teams, while the visitors are winless in their last 23 fixtures against clubs starting the day in the top four.

The signs point to another happy afternoon for those local to the banks of the Trent, with a victory and fifth home league clean sheet of the campaign available at 6/5.

Chris Wood anytime goalscorer - 6/5

Chris Wood opened the scoring against Liverpool, notching his 13th league goal of the season.

The Kiwi continues to confound his critics and is a good advert for hard work and perseverance. While he might be limited in some facets of his game, Wood and Nuno know what he is good at and have clearly grafted to get the best out of him.

At 33, he is currently playing the best football of his career and also has a wicked record against Southampton.

The Forest forward has recorded four goal involvements in his last five Premier League meetings with the Saints and if backing him, it might also be worthwhile exploring an assist for Anthony Elanga.

Elanga has played the final ball for eight of Wood's strikes, including against Liverpool, and is 10/3 to lay on another goal for his team.

Mateus Fernandes to be booked - 15/8

With Forest's preference for hitting teams on the break, the game could become stretched and that brings cards into play, with Saints' Mateus Fernandes a candidate.

The Portuguese signed from Sporting CP in the summer but has been noted for his industry rather than individuality, often having to dart around the midfield.

This has led to him receiving six yellow cards, including on Thursday at Old Trafford.

If Forest's Ryan Yates plays, expect midfield fireworks, with both unwilling to backtrack when it comes to matching their opposite number.
