United simply have to win to stand any chance of progressing to the Champions League knockout stages and that should make for an open game against a Bayern side who have already sealed top spot in Group A.

That is not to say the Red Devils’ continental outings have been low-scoring so far. Their five group games have averaged 5.2 goals-per-game and four of them have featured at least four goals, including a seven-goal thriller at the Allianz Arena back in September.

That was one of two 4-3 defeats Erik ten Hag’s side have suffered in the Champions League this season and they have conceded at least three goals on four occasions in the competition, while they have shipped 38 goals in 23 competitive matches this season.

The visiting Bavarians have hardly been tight at the back, either. They conceded five at Frankfurt on Saturday and have only kept one clean sheet in the Champions League this season, with an average of 3.4 goals-per-game being scored across these five outings.

With both sides struggling at the back and the hosts needing a win at all costs, expect the goals to flow at Old Trafford.

Harry Kane to score - 11/10

Harry Kane failed to score for the second game running in Frankfurt, but the England captain should rediscover his scoring touch against a defensively frail United.

The summer signing has scored a phenomenal 22 goals in 18 appearances in the Bundesliga and Champions League this season, and both scored and assisted in their 4-3 win over Man Utd in Munich.

With 16 goals in his last 11 starts for club and country, Kane is the frontrunner to get on the scoresheet on Tuesday.

Rasmus Hojlund to score - 6/4

Rasmus Hojlund has endured a difficult start to life in the Premier League, but the young Denmark international has taken well to the Champions League and can boost his side’s chances with a goal on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old is the joint-top scorer in the competition with five goals from five appearances and should be well-rested for this tie after being limited to half-an-hour from the bench on Saturday.

He scored his first United goal at the Allianz Arena in September and could strike again at Old Trafford.

Manchester United team news

Hojlund is expected to return to the starting line-up in place of Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford could also make a comeback, potentially replacing Antony on the right.

United remain injury-hit at the back, though, with Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia and Casemiro all ruled out and Victor Lindelof a doubt for Tuesday’s tie, while midfield duo Christian Eriksen and Mason Mount are also sidelined.

Bayern Munich team news

Serge Gnabry picked up a groin strain just five minutes after coming on against Frankfurt on Saturday and will be ruled out for a lengthy period.

He joins Bouna Sarr, Matthijs de Ligt and Tarek Buchmann on the sidelines for Die Bayern, while Jamal Musiala could return to the starting lineup in place of Eric Choupo Moting.

Manchester United vs Bayern Munich stats

18 goals have been scored in the last four competitive meetings between Manchester United and Bayern Munich.

United’s Champions League games this season have averaged 5.2 goals-per-game.
