Manchester City Women v Manchester United Women: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Manchester City Women will look to extend their 10-game winning streak in the Women’s Super League when they host local rivals United in the derby on Saturday afternoon.

Gareth Taylor’s team began that run at Old Trafford in November and can now overtake leaders Chelsea, who play on Sunday, with a positive result in front of a huge crowd.

United are currently fourth in the table, with plenty of work to do if they are to catch Arsenal for the third Champions League spot.

They followed up their Women’s FA Cup quarter-final win at Brighton with a 2-0 home league success over Bristol City last weekend, but will travel to the Etihad Stadium knowing the club has never won an away derby fixture.

Manchester City Women v Manchester United Women betting tips and predictions

Manchester City Women win & both teams score - 2/1

City’s 3-1 victory at the Theatre of Dreams late last year got them back on track after a difficult start to the season.

Taylor’s team recovered from the early setback of conceding to a Katie Zelem penalty and they kept United at bay after the break, despite being reduced to 10 when Laia Aleixandri received her second yellow card.

The Citizens have not looked back, beating everyone in their path in league play since that game.

Their 1-0 win at Chelsea last month drew them level with Emma Hayes’ side, who had coasted to victory over United a few weeks before.

Overcoming United again will not be easy - Marc Skinner’s outfit have won three of their last five WSL matches.

But the Red Devils have slipped up in their last three away assignments, losing 3-1 to both Chelsea and Arsenal before conceding a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw at West Ham earlier this month.

United’s camp is nowhere near as settled or harmonious as City’s with several key players, including England goalkeeper Mary Earps, and the manager out of contract in the summer and unsure of where their future lies.

They will give it a go and can score against City, who have kept only four clean sheets in their last 10 league games, but the home side should rise to the occasion and claim an important three points.

Khadija Shaw Over 1.5 shots on target - 4/6

City’s leading goalscorer Khadija Shaw will be out to add to her tally of 16 WSL strikes this season.

The Jamaica international also tops the charts for all the statistical categories important to strikers including total shots, shots on target and expected goals (xG).

This season, Shaw has been taking five shots per 90 minutes for City in the league with an average of 2.23 on target.

She scored with her only on-target effort at Brighton last weekend, but had worked the goalkeeper at least two times in seven of her previous nine matches.

United’s defence gave up 17 shots in the last league derby, despite playing at home and with a player advantage for the final 20 minutes.

Another defensive display like that should enable Shaw to maintain her average number of efforts on target this Saturday.

Lauren Hemp to score anytime - 7/4

Although Shaw got her goal at Brighton last weekend, England’s Lauren Hemp outshone her in an attacking sense with a brilliant display on the South Coast.

Marauding from deep, Hemp scored the opening goal and set up the second before hitting the woodwork with another effort in the second half.

The 23-year-old has delivered eight goals in 15 WSL games this season while she was also on target twice for the Lionesses during their 5-1 thrashing of Italy last month.

And, with goals in three of City’s last four WSL matches, she looks a good bet to strike at some stage of the derby.
