Manchester City need to pick themselves up from their 3-2 home reverse to Real Madrid and they should be severely tested by Newcastle United, who have won their last six league and cup away games.
Over 3.5 goals - 11/10
City’s UEFA Champions League clash with Real on Wednesday was a goal-filled rollercoaster of a spectacle and it could be a similar story when the Premier League champions entertain Newcastle at the Etihad on Saturday.
The Citizens had a firm grip on proceedings before falling to two late goals from the defending champions and it capped what has been a difficult couple of weeks for Pep Guardiola’s side after they were thumped 5-1 at Arsenal and then limped past League One Leyton Orient in the FA Cup.
Wednesday’s 3-2 loss was the 13th occasion in the last 15 City home matches that a game has featured more than two goals and the scoreboard could be even busier when the Magpies visit.
City have scored at least twice in seven of their last nine matches on their own patch, but Newcastle, who sit level on points with Guardiola’s fifth-placed outfit on 41, have won their last six league and cup away matches.
Eddie Howe’s side have a dismal record against City - they have won just one of their last 14 meetings and failed to net on their last six visits to the Etihad - but the Magpies have scored at least twice in their last seven road games, so over 3.5 goals looks like a decent bet.
Alexander Isak to score at any time - 7/5
Newcastle have been a strong top-flight force lately and striker Alexander Isak’s performances have been particularly impressive.
The Swedish forward has failed to net in his last two appearances at St James’ Park, which ended in defeats against Bournemouth and Fulham, but his form on the road has been impressive as he has scored 10 times in his last eight league outings away from home.
Five of those came in matches against strugglers Ipswich Town and Southampton, but he could still prove a real thorn in City’s side on Saturday, particularly as he was rested last weekend when he played just one minute of the Magpies’ 3-2 FA Cup fourth-round victory at Birmingham City.
Over 6.5 Manchester City corners - 5/6
It was a surprise to see City muster just two corners in their last home Premier League game against Chelsea and they have earned fewer than seven in each of their last four matches at the Etihad.
However, there should be a word of warning for punters who think this situation is likely to extend into another game, as it has got to the stage at the home side claiming at least seven flag-kicks has come to a backable price.
An offer of 5/6 is available for such an eventuality against the Magpies and there looks to be a strong chance that the figure will be eclipsed this time.
The Citizens had at least seven corners in 13 of their 14 home matches before their recent run of low tallies and the exception was a UEFA Champions League clash with Serie A winners Inter Milan which ended goalless.
They earned four on that occasion, but the Citizens have had at least eight in 11 of their last 13 on their own patch, so they could earn more than six on Saturday.
