Manchester City v Newcastle: Predictions, Tips and Odds

Newcastle head to the Etihad on Saturday evening for an FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester City knowing that this competition represents their final shot at silverware this season.

The Magpies are enduring a troubled campaign, but they are the side responsible for denying City a shot at the quadruple this season, so can they also end the Citizens’ hopes of repeating their treble, or will the in-form hosts march on?

Manchester City v Newcastle betting tips and predictions

Manchester City to win and both teams to score - 8/5

City returned from Anfield with a point last weekend, extending an unbeaten run which started in December to 21 games.

City have been fantastic in 2024, winning 12 of their first 14 games and scoring goals for fun along the way. That run includes a 3-2 victory at St James’ Park when these two sides met back in mid-January.

Newcastle had something of a revival early in 2024, but their 3-2 loss at Chelsea on Monday night means they’ve won once across their last five games and the Magpies needed penalties to see off Championship strugglers Blackburn in the last round of this competition.

City are heavy favourites to win this tie, but they do have a couple of concerns.

While the European champions look all-conquering once more, their defensive standards have slipped. Pep Guardiola’s men have conceded in each of their last four games, which included wins over Luton and Copenhagen.

Newcastle have the attacking threat to hurt this City defence, they’re just conceding far too many goals.

The visitors have seen both teams score in seven of their last eight, while they’ve scored in eight successive away matches. Back them to get a goal in a defeat at the Etihad, with City to win and concede priced at 8/5.

Alexander Isak to score anytime - 10/3

While City look set for a victory, Newcastle’s record going forward could make one of their players a standout in the anytime goalscorer market.

The Magpies’ biggest threat remains Alexander Isak, who has returned to form in the last couple of weeks.

After going four games without a goal, Isak has notched in back-to-back clashes with Wolves and Chelsea. The Swede tends to put together good scoring runs before going quiet, but his return of 16 goals in 29 games for Newcastle is solid.

Isak has struck twice in the FA Cup already this year and the forward has found the net in the previous two meetings between these sides.

The forward has struck seven times across his last 10 games and, with City conceding chances of late, Isak is good value to find the net in this encounter.

Manchester City to win 3-1 - 9/1

The two Premier League meetings between these sides were settled by a single goal, but Saturday’s cup tie should see a healthier margin for the hosts.

Newcastle have lost their last two league trips, conceding three goals at Chelsea and being thumped 4-1 at Arsenal. Meanwhile, Man City have won by a 3-1 scoreline in three their last six home games across all competitions.

City’s last two at the Etihad have brought 3-1 wins over Manchester United and Copenhagen.

They’ve won by that scoreline on six different occasions since Boxing Day, while Eddie Howe’s Newcastle have conceded three goals or more in six of their nine away defeats in the Premier League this term.

Newcastle’s scoring record suggests they’re good for a goal, but with the visitors stuck in 10th place they are unlikely to keep this close against a surging City side.

The hosts have won seven of their eight home games since returning from the Club World Cup and they’ve scored 20 times in that stretch.

With Newcastle coming off the back of some heavy defeats, back a few goals for City with the hosts surrendering a clean sheet once again.

A 3-1 victory for Guardiola’s side is the standout correct score option at 9/1.
