Manchester City v Brentford tips and predictions

Manchester City win/Both Teams To Score @ 8/5

Just over two weeks after beating Brentford 3-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium, take Manchester City to complete a quickfire double over the Bees on home soil.

Three days after being frustrated by a decent Chelsea side in a match which ended 1-1, City can take it out on Brentford who, as Liverpool proved at the weekend, are there for the taking.

City to win looks obvious and is reflected in the prices. City to win and both teams to score is more of a risk but one worth taking considering the ease with which Pep Guardiola’s champions were picked apart by Chelsea on Saturday night.

This is the time of the season when City throw caution to the wind and few sides do it better than them. Boasting 70% possession against Chelsea, they also racked up 31 shots and by the back end of the second half the pressure was relentless.

This City team, however, looks vulnerable when space is left in behind - which it repeatedly is.

Nicolas Jackson and Raheem Sterling between them exploited those holes to score for Chelsea and they could have had had more, with Brentford possessing players like Ivan Toney and Yoane Wissa with plenty of pace who cause their rearguard problems.

The Bees can score as they have done in each of their last ten matches. However, with only one clean sheet in 17 they are also being breached too easily, best illustrated by Liverpool on Saturday as an injury-hit Reds side scythed through them at will.

Chelsea are inconsistent but Brentford are struggling and in real danger of being drawn into a relegation scrap.

Erling Haaland had an off day against Chelsea, a day when he had nine shots but couldn’t score.

That doesn’t happen very often and on the assumption that Guardiola has read his team the riot act over their poor first-half showing on Saturday evening, expect City to be bright from the off and win this well. But not without a scary moment or two at the back.

Bernardo Silva to score or assist @ 6/5

City are now up to an average of almost 18 shots per game - bettered only by Liverpool - after piling up 31 efforts against Chelsea.

They may have lost their composure in front of goal against the Blues but they certainly didn’t compromise on their famed relentlessness.

And Brentford know they are going to be chasing shadows and the ball for long periods with fresh faces presumably drafted in by Guardiola in the shape of Matheus Nunes, John Stones and Bernardo Silva.

Indeed, Silva looked lively and more influential than most in the half hour he clocked up off the bench against Chelsea, creating chances and getting away a couple of shots.

Despite not being a regular, the Portuguese schemer has made 17 starts and has six goals and four assists to his name.

Silva is a consistent if not prolific goalscorer and creates chances; he’s in the Premier League’s top dozen for big chances created this season despite playing fewer minutes than most of those ahead of him.

Over 10.5 corners @ Evens

The over 10.5 corners bet copped at the Etihad on Saturday and has to be the way to go again against the next set of West London visitors.

There were 13 corners with City claiming 12 of them as they cranked up the pressure and Chelsea got deeper and deeper.

The Bees conceded six at home to Liverpool in Saturday’s 4-1 defeat and concede an average of six in every away game. City meanwhile average 7.7 corners per game.
