Managers to have won the UEFA Champions League with more than one club

We examine the exclusive group of managers to have won the UEFA Champions League with more than one club.

This esteemed list includes managers to have won the UEFA Champions League or its European Cup predecessor with two different teams.

UEFA Champions League

Ernst Happel (Feyenoord and Hamburg SV)

An accomplished defender during his playing days, Ernst Happel was selected in Rapid Vienna's Team of the Century in 1999.

It was as a manager that Happel received most international acclaim, with the Austrian winning league titles in four different countries - Austria, West Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Happel also famously won the European Cup with two different teams - Feyenoord in 1970 and Hamburger SV in 1983.

Capped 51 times by Austria as a player, Happel led Feyenoord to the European Cup in 1970 with a 2-1 win over win over 1967 winners Celtic after extra time in the final at the San Siro in Milan.

Happel became a two-time European Cup winner 13 years later, as his Hamburger SV side overcame Juventus 1-0 in the final at the Olympic Stadium in Athens.

Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich)

Ottmar Hitzfeld became the second manager to win Europe's premier club competition with two different clubs, achieving the feat with Borussia Dortmund in 1997 and Bayern Munich in 2001.

The 1997 UEFA Champions League final saw Hitzfeld's Dortmund down Juventus 3-1 at the Olympiastadion in Munich, with Karl-Heinz Riedle bagging a brace for the German outfit.

Just four years on, at the iconic San Siro, Hitzfeld led out Dortmund's rivals Bayern in the 2001 UEFA Champions League final, with the Bavarians prevailing over Valencia on penalties after a 1-1 draw following 120 minutes of action.

Jupp Heynckes (Real Madrid and Bayern Munich)

Hitzfeld's compatriot Jupp Heynckes is also a member of this exclusive club of managers to have won the UEFA Champions League with more than one club, guiding Real Madrid to the trophy in 1998 and then masterminding Bayern Munich's success in 2013.

A West Germany international as a player, winning the World Cup in 1974, Heynckes led a Real Madrid side including Roberto Carlos, Clarence Seedorf and Raul to the UEFA Champions League title in 1998 following a 1-0 win over Juventus in the final at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Heynckes became a two-time UEFA Champions League winner as a manager 15 years later, with his indomitable Bayern team toppling Bundesliga adversaries Dortmund 2-1 in the Wembley final as part of a historic Treble of trophies for the Bavarian giants in the 2012/13 campaign.

Carlo Ancelotti (Milan and Real Madrid)

A two-time European Cup winner with Milan as a player in 1989 and 1990, Carlo Ancelotti went on to manage the club to two UEFA Champions League crowns in 2003 and 2007.

Milan's first UEFA Champions League success under Ancelotti's stewardship saw the Italians overcome Serie A rivals Juventus on penalties following a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford after 120 minutes, with the Rossoneri winning the trophy again four years later with a 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the final in Athens.

The legendary Ancelotti also managed Real Madrid to three UEFA Champions League titles in 2014, 2022 and 2024, with Atletico Madrid, Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund the respective runners-up to Los Blancos.

Jose Mourinho (Porto and Inter)

The charismatic Jose Mourinho won his first UEFA Champions League title as a manager with underdogs Porto in 2004, with the Portuguese outfit defeating Monaco 3-0 in the final at the Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen courtesy of goals from Carlos Alberto, Deco and Dmitri Alenichev.

Mourinho would again inspire relative outsiders to the trophy in 2010, with his Inter side beating Bayern Munich 2-0 in the UEFA Champions League final at the Santiago Bernabeu as part of a Treble accrued by the Nerazzurri.

Pep Guardiola (Barcelona and Manchester City)

Pep Guardiola became the most recent manager to win the UEFA Champions League with a second club after leading Manchester City to the Treble in 2023.

The Citizens beat Simone Inzaghi's Inter in the 2023 UEFA Champions League final at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, with Rodri firing home the winning goal for the Premier League side in the 68th minute.

Guardiola had previously won the UEFA Champions League as Barcelona manager in 2009 and 2011, overseeing one of the great club sides of all time featuring the legendary Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Xavi.

Manchester United were the runners-up to Barcelona in the competition in both 2009 and 2011, losing the finals at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome and Wembley respectively.

Luis Enrique (Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain)

The most recent edition to the list of managers to have won the UEFA Champions League with more than one side is Luis Enrique.

While the Spaniard was unable to win the competition with Barca in his playing career, he returned in 2014 as the manager and would need just one season to win the club's fifth honour, winning the treble in the process.

After six years out of club management, PSG would come calling in 2023, hiring Enrique with the hope that he would inspire them to their first ever UEFA Champions League title.

While at Barcelona he needed just one year, in Paris he needed two. A remarkable achievement with a side who had lost the likes of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar in the years prior.

A phenomenal manager who has been mooted as one of the best of this century.
