Luke Molyneux potential next club after contract rejection

Luke Molyneux looks set for a move away from Doncaster Rovers this summer following confirmation that he has turned down the chance to extend his contract.

Molyneux arrived at Doncaster in 2022 from Hartlepool and he has been an integral part of the first team ever since, making in excess of 200 appearances.

The 28-year-old scored 16 goals to help Rovers earn promotion from League Two in the 2024/25 season, collecting the club's Player of the Season, Players' Player of the Year, Supporters' Player of the Year and Goal of the Season awards in the process.

He netted eight times and registered 11 assists in all competitions in the 2025/26 campaign, helping Doncaster finish 14th in League One, but his four-year spell at the club could be coming to an end.

Molyneux rejects contract talks

Molyneux's contract is set to expire next summer and Rovers boss Grant McCann has confirmed the midfielder has rejected a new deal.

He said, as quoted by the club's official website: "We sat down as staff, and with Gavin (Baldwin), and I said, look, we need to tie these two down.

"Luke, unfortunately, has not wanted to get into negotiations. He's rejected a deal, which is his prerogative, so that's where he is."

McCann has also revealed the club have turned down an offer from an unnamed team for Molyneux, adding: "We've rejected a bid for Luke, so that's in discussion the minute, this came after the offer of the contract - we offered the contract way before the bid.

"That's where we are with Luke and we'll see how that progresses."

With a summer exit looking likely given Doncaster will not want Molyneux to run down his contract and leave for free, we have assessed where he could end up.

Wycombe Wanderers

It is believed the unnamed club who had a bid for Molyneux rejected is Wycombe Wanderers, who finished three points and three places higher that Doncaster last season.

The Chairboys have been busy in the summer transfer market, bringing in Conor Hazard, Silko Thomas, Steve Cook, Matt Macey and Cauley Woodrow on permanent deals.

Head coach Michael Duff is looking for more reinforcements and Molyneux is said to be a prime target, with his attacking qualities something the Terriers would dearly love.

Wycombe are said to be in negotiations with Doncaster after the rejected bid and it remains to be seen whether an improved offer is made.

Sheffield Wednesday

After last season's dismal performance in the Championship, Sheffield Wednesday will be hoping for an instant return to the second tier and they could be a potential destination for Molyneux.

The Owls are in the midst of a big recruitment driver this summer, with  Billy Mitchell, Callum Slattery, Joe Lumley, Louie Barry, Jordi Liongola, Ricardo Santos, Sil Swinkels, Barry Bannan, Harry Gray and William Grainger all brought in.

Wednesday may not be done just yet when it comes to new arrivals and Molyneux may be interested in a switch to Hillsborough, which would keep him in South Yorkshire.

MK Dons

After signing for Doncaster in 2022, Molyneux revealed he held lengthy talks with MK Dons over a switch to Stadium MK but a deal failed to materialise.

The Dons, who are 16/1 to win League One in 2026/27 and 5/1 to be promoted, could be tempted to make an offer for the in-demand midfielder.

Notts County

Notts County earned promotion to League One via the play-offs last season and they are keen to strengthen their squad ahead of their quest to reach the Championship.

The Magpies have brought in six new additions this summer, adding the likes of James Gibbons and Max Sanders, but they are keen for more attacking quality and Molyneux could be a perfect fit.
