Liverpool have enjoyed a positive start to the season and will be eager to keep up that winning momentum when they host West Ham United in the EFL Cup third round on Wednesday night.
Since a shock 1-0 defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest, Arne Slot’s Reds have responded well with back-to-back wins away at AC Milan in the UEFA Champions League and at home to Bournemouth in the Premier League.
Next, the Reds host a West Ham side who are winless in their last three games, with a draw at Fulham sandwiched between home defeats to Manchester City and Chelsea.
Defence has been the issue of late for Julen Lopetegui’s side and Liverpool have the ability to take advantage when these teams clash on Merseyside.
Liverpool to win and both teams to score - 7/4
These sides have produced some entertaining games in recent years and the same can be expected for the EFL Cup clash on Wednesday.
Playing each other three times last season, 14 goals were scored in those two Premier League meetings and one encounter in the EFL Cup.
Looking back at the games at Anfield last term, Jurgen Klopp’s side won 3-1 in the Premier League and 5-1 in their EFL Cup encounter.
With both teams finding the back of the net in all of the last four games between the sides, West Ham might well get on the scoresheet on Wednesday night.
However, with the backing of the home crowd, their quality in the final third and with the momentum Slot has been building in this very early stage of his tenure, Liverpool should come out on top even if the Hammers do score at Anfield.
Cody Gakpo anytime goalscorer - 13/8
Slot has already hinted at making changes for Wednesday’s game, especially with Liverpool back in action on Saturday with a trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.
With so much competition for places in the final third for the Reds, Cody Gakpo has yet to start in the league this season but should get a starting role against the Irons.
Gakpo impressed in the domestic cup competitions last season and he will be a real threat for the hosts in attack if given the opportunity.
The Dutch international seems to like playing West Ham, having scored in two of his last three starts against the Hammers.
Looking to show Slot why he should be starting more in the Premier League, Gakpo is good value to get on the scoresheet against the Irons once again.
Carlos Soler to be booked - 8/1
With West Ham also expected to make wholesale changes after their 3-0 defeat to rivals Chelsea last time out, Carlos Soler could be handed a role in the midfield.
Former Valencia and Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Soler has already found himself in hot water with officials this season, with two yellow cards in the Premier League.
What’s even more impressive about that is Soler has only played a total of 56 minutes of Premier League football this season.
With Liverpool expected to have plenty of the ball and West Ham looking to knock the Reds off their stride, Soler to be booked at odds of 8/1 appeal here.
