Liverpool v Southampton: Tips, Predictions and Odds

This midweek FA Cup clash couldn't have come at a worse time for Liverpool and Southampton, who have hugely contrasting issues to contend with at Anfield on Wednesday.

The Reds must bring themselves back down to earth following Sunday's euphoric EFL Cup win at Wembley, while the Saints are desperate to arrest a slump that is jeopardising their Championship play-off push.

Liverpool lifted the EFL Cup despite ending the 1-0 win over Chelsea with a line-up featuring several young players, and injuries continue to cause problems for Jurgen Klopp, who will likely turn once more to some of his starlets.

Southampton boss Russell Martin will also likely juggle his side as this match is unlikely to be top of his priorities, with promotion from the Championship the main aim this season.

Saints have hit an indifferent run of form at just the wrong time with three defeats in their last four league matches, and Saturday's 2-1 home loss to strugglers Millwall is a particular concern for a side looking to get back to the Premier League.

The south coast side don't have a great record at Anfield, though, and it could be another evening to remember for Klopp's fringe players.

Liverpool v Southampton betting predictions

Liverpool to win to nil @ 5/2

Klopp will be forced to ring the changes once again for Liverpool on Wednesday, but even though he could be limited in his options, there may be a boost or two for the German gaffer.

A youthful side carried the Reds to EFL Cup glory after extra-time at Wembley, but Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez's possible returns could give Liverpool a much-needed lift on the fitness front.

Both sat out the Wembley win but suggestions were that the pair were close to featuring and that could spell bad news for Southampton, who have a miserable record at Anfield.

Saints have not won an FA Cup tie in front of the Kop in five attempts, failing to score in each of those defeats, while Liverpool have kept clean sheets in six of their last seven home meetings with Southampton.

So a Liverpool win to nil looks a decent bet given Southampton's recent run of poor form in the Championship. Saints have scored in their last 15 away matches, but even a reconstructed Reds rearguard can keep the visitors at bay.

Liverpool to score in both halves @ 11/10

They may only play a limited role at Anfield on Wednesday but star men Nunez, Salah and, possibly, Dominik Szoboszlai, could make their returns from injury and all three will be champing at the bit having had to watch the Wembley action from the sidelines on Sunday.

Nunez, in particular, showed a nifty turn of pace as he leapt off the Liverpool bench to join in the party at full-time and the pair could make it a long night for the Saints, who have kept just three clean sheets in their last nine matches.

Southampton have lost three of their last four league matches and conceded the first goal in each of those defeats.

Martin's men lost their last two matches against Millwall and Hull 2-1, conceding twice before half-time in both of those games.

It may not take the Reds long to get going, either, and the Premier League leaders look a decent bet to score in both halves.

Conor Bradley to score or assist for Liverpool @ 15/8

Liverpool's youngsters mainly took the plaudits at Wembley on Sunday and one of those, Conor Bradley, was withdrawn from the action in the 72nd minute following another all-action performance that has become his trademark during a breakout couple of months for the 20-year-old.

Bradley has become a star since making his Liverpool debut against LASK Linz at the end of November and played his part at the national stadium before running out of steam.

Filling in mainly at right-back, Bradley has claimed a goal and three assists in his four Premier League matches for the Reds this season and he looks a decent price to add to that tally against Southampton.

Bradley showed his versatility by playing most of the EFL Cup final on the right wing and it's possible he may get pushed forward once again as Klopp looks to shuffle his pack.

That could encourage Bradley to attack the Saints and he could play his part in a Liverpool victory at Anfield.
