Liverpool v Sheffield United: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Liverpool will be looking to chalk up another victory in the Premier League title race when welcoming relegation-threatened Sheffield United to Anfield on Thursday evening.

The Reds are in an intense battle with Arsenal and Manchester City for top honours this season and Jurgen Klopp won't want his side to slip up at home to the rock-bottom Blades, who are 10 points from safety.

An immediate drop down to the Championship looks likely for the Steel City outfit, who have tasted success just three times from 29 top-flight fixtures, but they can play their part in an entertaining spectacle on Merseyside.

Both teams to score in first half - 10/3

With Liverpool unbeaten at home this season and the Blades boasting the worst away record in the division, it is no surprise to see Klopp's troops the firm 1/12 favourites to chalk up another three points.

Famous last words, but a home win looks to be a banker and anything other than that would be a huge shock. There isn't much value in backing the Reds, though, and it may prove prudent to look at both teams finding the net in the opening 45 minutes.

Liverpool have been potent in attack this season, notching 67 times in the league with 40 of those coming at Anfield, again highlighting how strong they have been in front of their own fans.

Of the Reds' 15 home matches in the league, they have scored in the first half in 10 of those and they should have no trouble netting early against a United defence that has conceded 77 times - the worst record in the division.

But Klopp's troops have not been watertight at the back and they have conceded in each of their last seven top-flight assignments at Anfield, while it is just one clean sheet from their last eight outings.

This should provide the Blades with the hope they can get on the scoresheet and Chris Wilder's men have been better in the final third of late, notching five goals during their last two fixtures.

United have also scored in the first half in four of their last five away matches and they can keep that run going by finding the back of the net on Merseyside before the break.

Alexis Mac Allister to score anytime - 15/8

It's no surprise to see several Liverpool players odds on to net anytime in this contest, but one player that sticks out at 15/8 in this market is Alexis Mac Allister.

The Argentine has been crucial to the Reds' success this season and he has upped his goal output in recent weeks, bagging three times in his last five appearances in all competitions.

With Liverpool expected to dominate possession, Mac Allister should be given more freedom to get forward and he looks capable of adding to his goal tally.

Mason Holgate to be booked - 5/2

The Blades have fallen foul of the officials on a regular basis this season and their yellow cards tally of 86 is the highest in the division, while their count of four reds is bettered only by Liverpool (5) and Burnley (6).

One player that has made his mark since arriving at Bramall Lane on loan in the January transfer window is Mason Holgate, who has been a card magnet and is hard to ignore at 5/2 to be booked on Thursday.

The 27-year-old has picked up two yellows and one red from just four appearances for United, the latest of those cautions coming in the 3-3 draw against Fulham.

That was his first outing since serving his suspension for the red received against Brighton in February and Holgate shows no signs of changing his tough-tackling approach, so expect him to find his way into the book on Merseyside.
