Liverpool Europa League Odds: Jurgen Klopp’s men out to 9/2 to qualify after home shock

Nobody would have expected Liverpool to lose so comprehensively at home to Atalanta in their Europa League quarter-final first leg, but that is exactly what happened as the Reds fell to a 3-0 defeat.

That leaves Jurgen Klopp’s men with a massive mountain to climb in the second leg in Bergamo, with Liverpool now 9/2 to make the semi-finals.

Concerns grow for faltering Liverpool

Before the last-eight fixtures, Liverpool had been favourites to lift the Europa League trophy in Dublin on the 22nd May.

The Premier League giants are now out to 10/1 in the Outright betting, after being outplayed and outfought by their Serie A opponents.

As expected, Liverpool had the lion’s share of possession and chances in the first half at Anfield, with Harvey Elliott hitting both the post and bar with one effort.

Atalanta always posed a threat on the break though and broke the deadlock in the 38th minute through former West Ham striker Gianluca Scamacca.

Going in 1-0 down at the break and kicking towards the Kop in the second half, Liverpool were expected to bounce back. But the Serie A side kept them at arm’s length and secured two more goals on the break, through Scamacca and Mario Pasalic.

Reds need to find Istanbul-style fightback

Liverpool have enjoyed a number of dramatic European comebacks in their history – ask any Reds fan and they will instantly mention the 2005 Champions League final, as well as their comeback win over Barcelona in 2019.

This could be as big an ask though, especially when you consider Atalanta’s record at the Gewiss Stadium - where they have won nine of their last 10 matches.

La Dea’s Europa League home record is even more impressive, losing just one of their last 14 competition matches on home soil. Although they did fall behind, Gian Piero Gasperini’s men beat Sporting Lisbon 2-1 at home in the last round.

Liverpool’s away record in this season’s Europa League doesn’t make great reading either, with Klopp’s squad winning two and losing two of their four matches on the road.

They have though scored 11 goals across those four games and can be backed at 22/1 to win 4-0 in the second leg, which takes place in Bergamo on Thursday 18th April.

Van Dijk still has belief

Jurgen Klopp admitted after the match that Atalanta deserved their victory, describing it as a “really bad game” for his team.

The German, who will leave Anfield at the end of the season, stated that his side were “all over the place” at times during Thursday’s defeat.

Reds' captain Virgil van Dijk insists that they should not overreact to this performance and that the squad still has a chance to turn the tie around.

The Dutchman said: "If you don't believe, there's no point going to Italy. We have made it very hard for ourselves going there 3-0 down. But the way to bounce back is by winning the game on the weekend (v Crystal Palace).

"We need everyone to switch it back on. Then we can focus on putting out at least four goals over there."
