Liverpool v Brentford: Prediction, Tips and Odds

A victory over Ipswich in Liverpool’s first official match of the post-Jurgen Klopp era was to be expected and Arne Slot must prove he is the man for the monumental job by continuing to impress against Brentford on Sunday.

The Bees opened their league campaign with a win of their own against Crystal Palace and could provide more of a challenge for the Reds than what the Tractor Boys offered, although their record at Anfield leaves a lot to be desired and the Kop will expect another victory from the hosts.

Liverpool v Brentford betting tips and predictions

Liverpool to win to nil - 5/4

Slot will have been very happy with his side’s performance against Ipswich as they grew into the game and ultimately dominated proceedings in Suffolk.

The hosts started strongly and, buoyed on by a loud Portman Road crowd, caused Liverpool some issues in the first half. However, Slot nullified the Tractor Boys’ threat by bringing on Ibrahima Konate for Jarell Quansah at the back and that switch gave the Reds control of the game.

Goals from Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah secured the win in a clash which saw Liverpool rack up an impressive 2.51 expected goals, 18 shots, 62 percent possession and 10 corners.

It was an utterly dominant display from a side who looked like they had been playing under Slot for years and it was a showing which will have Brentford worried ahead of a daunting trip to Anfield.

The Bees also won their opener, beating London rivals Crystal Palace 2-1, but there was an element of fortune to their success as Eberechi Eze wrongfully had a brilliant free-kick disallowed for a foul with the score at 0-0.

The Eagles won the shot count 14-9 in that clash and a repeat of that performance from Brentford would likely see them leave Anfield with zero points, something they have become accustomed to since reaching the Premier League in 2021.

Since their promotion, Thomas Frank’s side have lost all three of their trips to Liverpool and they are yet to even score an away goal against the Reds, losing the trio of meetings by an aggregate score of 7-0.

Given the Reds have lost just one of their last 31 league home matches - a run which includes 24 wins - and Brentford have lost on 10 of their last 14 Premier League away days, it seems likely the hosts will wrap up a comfortable win, with the Bees failing to beat Alisson once again.

Diogo Jota to score anytime - 1/1

Liverpool’s new manager made a fairly bold call in his first match, opting to start Jota up front over the Reds’ number nine Darwin Nunez, who had scored two goals at the Copa America over the summer.

However, Slot’s gamble soon paid off as Jota scored the opener at Portman Road and it could be worth backing the forward to find the net once more against a Brentford side which shipped seven goals in their two meetings with Liverpool last term.

The Reds’ Portuguese star was on target in this exact fixture last term and has a solid record of two goals and one assists in five appearances against the Bees, suggesting he could continue repaying his manager’s faith on Sunday.

Ten of Jota’s 15 goals last term came at Anfield and he could send the Kop into raptures once more when Liverpool take on Brentford this weekend.

Kristoffer Ajer to be carded - 11/5

Due to an injury crisis at left-back - long-term absentees Aaron Hickey and Rico Henry are still out - Kristoffer Ajer was deployed there against Crystal Palace last weekend.

With no other natural options, the giant centre-back may have to play out of position there against Liverpool, which could lead to some issues down Brentford’s left as he will have to keep tabs on Salah at Anfield.

Ajer coped well at left-back against Crystal Palace, keeping Daichi Kamada and Ismaila Sarr relatively quiet, but facing Salah is a step up that he may not be ready for and he could find his name in the referee’s book as a result.

The Norwegian has been booked in both of his appearances at Anfield and given he will be playing out of position and tasked with keeping one of the best players in the world quiet, he could extend that unwanted streak on Sunday.
